A former Robin is about to return to the pages of Batman just as The Dark Knight loses his current Robin. The Boy Wonder is one of the most iconic sidekicks in superhero comics, and every Batman fan has their favorite Robin. However, a name often overlooked and forgotten in the Robin lineage is Stephanie Brown.
While Stephanie Brown is largely known as the vigilante Spoiler, she did spend time as Batman’s Robin. Her on-again/off-again boyfriend, Tim Drake, was holding down the mantle of Robin in Matt Fraction and Jorge Jimenez’s Batman, but he recently quit. According to Fraction, Batman readers will get to see Stephanie Brown’s reaction to Tim Drake’s Robin retirement.
Matt Fraction was a guest on the Comic Book Club podcast, where he was asked how Bat-Family members like Stephanie Brown will react to Tim Drake’s decision to step down as Robin. "You're gonna see Stephanie find out what's up in Issue #9," Fraction revealed.
"Again, it was one of those moments where I was feeling my way around Stephanie, and I had a thought and reached out to Michael Conrad and Becky Cloonan and said, 'Here's where I'm at, and here's what I think would happen,' and ran it by them," he continued.
"They were like, 'That's totally what would happen.' So Stephanie will find out about the Drake Break in Batman."
Stephanie Brown Was an Underrated Robin for Batman
Stephanie stepped in for Tim as Robin back in 2004, though her time as the Boy Wonder was cut short when Batman shockingly fired her. However, that hasn't stopped fans from wanting to see Stephanie reclaim the sidekick mantle. She has mostly fought on Team Batman as Spoiler, though she's also been Batgirl.
Stephanie is the first female Robin in DC's main continuity, though she's only the second female to hold the title after The Dark Knight Returns' Carrie Kelley. Michael Conrad and Becky Cloonan recently wrote Stephanie Brown in their run of Batgirls. With Batgirl being relaunched, that leaves Stephanie free to check in on Tim.
With so many former and current Robins running around the DC Universe, the publisher has to work overtime to find satisfying roles for all of them. With Tim stepping away, that makes room for someone like Stephanie to step into the spotlight. Nightwing is busy leading the Titans, and Damian Wayne fights alongside his father in Batman and Robin.
Batman was the only title where readers could see Tim's exploits as Robin, but now the costume will remain vacant. Will Batman make up for his error of firing Stephanie Brown all those years ago and accept her as his new Robin? Or will Batman feature the Caped Crusader teaming up with a Batgirl instead of a Robin?
