It has become tradition, when the Halloween season rolls around, to see what update Michael Dougherty has next regarding the long-awaited sequel to his 2009 horror favorite, Trick 'r Treat. It might still be a while before that movie sees the dark of night, but at least fans have another follow-up to look forward to.

A collection of four new, terrifying tales set in the world of the beloved cult classic will be presented in the upcoming graphic novel, Trick 'r Treat: Witching Hours, which is releasing in Summer 2026.

Dougherty, alongside a team of writers and artists, are coming together to deliver this spooky batch of tricks and treats that are each likely to involve one of modern horror cinema's most revered and adorable icons, the mischievous trick-or-treater, Sam (played by Quinn Lord in the original quasi-horror anthology movie). However, Trick 'r Treat: Witching Hours also promises to deliver all-new scares for fans of the original film to make memories with.

Dougherty brings on Todd Casey and Zach Shields (with whom he co-wrote the 2015 holiday horror-comedy Krampus) to help him craft two chapters in this horror-anthology comic book. The first is "One Last Halloween," featuring artwork by Rafael Pimentel, in which the Spirit of Halloween is summoned by a group of lonely nursing home residents for a final All Hallows' Eve hurrah.

The trio also collaborated with illustrator Andrea Mutti and colorist Valerio Alloro on "Did You Miss Me?" This is a twisted Halloween love story about a man mysteriously brought back from the dead to reunite with his wife.

"Harvest Moons" sees Dougherty join forces with writer Curtis Waugh and artists El Garing and Ellie Wright to take things out of this world... literally. The tale follows a group of children residing on a space colony who learn the truth about Halloween for the first time.

The final chapter, co-written with Dougherty by Breehn Burns, who also provides the artwork, is "Halloween Country." This one is a creature feature about a trio of ranch hands who accidentally unleash an ancient evil in rural Wyoming.

Trick 'r Treat: Witching Hours will only be the latest graphic novel release spun off from Michael Dougherty's enduring classic, the first of which was a direct adaptation also released in 2009. Writer Marc Andreyko and artist Fiona Staples worked on the retelling of the film's comically creepy, interwoven tales involving a school principal hiding a deadly secret, a reclusive curmudgeon who gets a crash course in the importance of following holiday tradition, and more.

However, the second comic book inspired by Trick 'r Treat, 2015's Trick 'r Treat: Days of the Dead, was the first release from the medium to expand on the film's lore. The graphic novel was yet another collection of four freaky stories that also see Dougherty teaming with Andreyko, Todd Casey and Zach Shields as writers, but with different artists for each chapter.

The stories also span several different decades, even centuries, of time, such as with the Irish romance "Seed," which takes place during the era of witch trials, and the 19th-century coming-of-age cautionary tale, "Corn Maiden." "Echoes" is an unsettling slice of detective noir, following a private eye on a haunting case in 1950s California, and "Monster Mash," about a pair of best friends experiencing a truly unforgettable Halloween, is the most modern of the bunch.

Trick 'r Treat: Witching Hours is set to haunt comic book stores and digital platforms on Aug. 18, 2026.
