Rapper Nicki Minaj is speaking openly about her return to faith, telling audiences she has reconnected with God after years of drifting away from church life. The music star discussed her spiritual journey during Turning Point USA’s AmFest, describing how faith shaped her early life and how she’s now finding her way back.

“When I was about 10, 11, 12, I started going to church every week in New York,” she said, recalling her upbringing in Trinidad and her early attraction to Christianity. “It changed my life for the better.” Minaj said she learned to pray as a child and was baptized by age 13.
She admitted she hasn’t always maintained that connection, explaining that as fame and work took over, she began to rely on faith “in the heart” rather than through church fellowship. “Then sometimes you can be in an industry as well that pulls you away even more,” Minaj said. She compared her recent renewal to “bumping into a long-lost best friend,” describing prayer as a homecoming. “God said to me, ‘Where were you? I’ve been waiting on you.’”
Minaj’s renewed faith has also extended into activism. At a U.S. embassy event in New York focused on religious freedom, she called for stronger protection of Nigerian Christians facing persecution. “This is about standing up in the face of injustice,” she said. “Religious freedom means we all sing our faith regardless of who we are, where we live and what we believe.”

The rapper echoed that message online, writing, “On Christ the solid rock I stand. All other ground is sinking sand. FREE THE CHRISTIANS IN NIGERIA!!!!!!!!!! STOP THIS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #FreeChristians.”
Minaj’s public return to Christianity follows years of controversy, including her widely criticized 2012 Grammys performance of Roman Holiday, where she staged a mock exorcism that many viewers called blasphemous. Now, she says her focus is on spiritual growth and using her platform to defend others’ right to worship freely.

Whether her faith journey endures remains to be seen, but Minaj insists her return to God is real. “I’ve been waiting on Him,” she said. Analysts say the cultural shift among celebrities turning back to faith is far from over.
