Christopher Nolan’s new film The Odyssey has hit theaters with strong numbers and heavy attention, even as online debate surrounded the project before release. The movie pulled in more than $257 million worldwide in its opening weekend, setting it on track for a possible billion-dollar run. Critics and commentators weighed in early on everything from casting to costumes, along with changes to Homer’s original story. Emily Wilson, whose translation helped shape the film, also became part of the broader criticisms of the movie, although much of the backlash played out before audiences had even seen the finished product. Now Nolan appears to have come out of that storm in strong position at the box office. Still, the director says the experience pushed him to his limits.
