The comic book world has lost one of its most influential storytellers. Gerry Conway, the prolific writer whose work helped shape both Marvel Comics and DC Comics, has passed away at the age of 73. His death was confirmed by Marvel Comics on April 27, 2026.

For generations of readers, Conway’s name became synonymous with bold storytelling, unforgettable characters, and emotional stakes that changed superhero comics forever.

Conway took over The Amazing Spider-Man while still a teenager, an astonishing achievement in itself. During his legendary run, he wrote one of the most famous stories in comic history: The Night Gwen Stacy Died. That shocking storyline transformed superhero comics by proving that real consequences could exist in a world of masks and capes.

He also helped elevate Spider-Man from a fun superhero into a layered, emotionally grounded character whose stories resonated with older readers.

Conway’s creative fingerprints are everywhere in modern pop culture. At Marvel Comics, he co-created:

  • The Punisher
  • Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers version)
  • Man-Thing
  • Werewolf by Night
  • Jackal
  • Ben Reilly

At DC Comics, he co-created:

  • Firestorm
  • Power Girl
  • Jason Todd
  • Killer Croc

Few writers in comics history can claim a resume that touched so many major franchises.

Conway’s talents extended into television as well, where he worked as a writer and producer on numerous projects. Yet comics always remained the foundation of his legacy.

He was also respected as a fierce advocate for creator rights and for the value of comic book storytelling as an art form.

Fans across the world are mourning the loss of a creator whose imagination helped define modern superhero mythology. Social media tributes poured in immediately after news of his passing, with readers remembering not only his stories, but also his kindness and generosity with fans.

Gerry Conway leaves behind a body of work that will continue to inspire readers, creators, and dreamers for generations.

Rest in peace to a giant of comics.
