Jason is an award-winning journalist whose writing career dates back to when he developed the ability to use a crayon. He, most notably, worked previously as a "professional fan," as he likes to call it, at CinemaBlend, for which he wrote about anything and everything under the pop culture umbrella... especially Batman. His passion for the art of cinema began even earlier, stemming from repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz.
This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.
The ultimate and most easily recognizable name in the world of medieval fantasy comic books is, without a doubt, Conan the Barbarian. Of course, he is not the only powerful hero the genre has to offer, and he is about to learn that firsthand in a new crossover, and we have the first look!
Conan will cross paths with a famed slayer of dragons in Conan the Barbarian and Dragonero, a seven-part miniseries to be published outside of Italy for the first time by Heroic Signatures and Titan Comics.
Image via Titan Comics and Heroic SignaturesThe comic book, written by Luca Enoch and Stefano Vietti with illustrations by Lorenzo Nuti, sees the sword-wielding Cimerrian mysteriously brought to a land known as Erondár through dark forces. It is there that he becomes acquainted with Dragonero, which does not begin as a cordial meeting, to say the least.
However, as most crossover comic book series of this nature tend to go, Conan and the dragon slayer soon realize that they would be a greater benefit to each other as a team than as enemies. In fact, it soon becomes apparent to each warrior that teaming up will be necessary to defeat a force of mystical mayhem that threatens their respective worlds.
Created by American author Robert E. Howard, Conan would make his debut in a series of fantasy stories published in the magazine Weird Tales in the early 1930s. The sword and sorcery character would achieve international mainstream recognition when he was portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1982 live-action film, Conan the Barbarian, which was followed by the sequel, Conan the Destroyer, two years later.
Conan would remain a comic book staple while also inspiring a multimedia franchise that includes two television series adaptations (one in live-action and another that is animated), video games, and even tabletop role-playing games in the vein of Dungeons & Dragons. The character would be brought back to live-action cinema when Conan the Barbarian was remade in 2011 with Jason Momoa in the title role.
So, it is safe to say that Conan's notoriety is still alive and well. However, some fans might be meeting his new partner-in-crime for the first time through Conan the Barbarian and Dragonero as well.
Who Is Dragonero?
Image via Dark Horse ComicsDragonero has achieved a legacy somewhat similar to Conan the Barbarian, in terms of seeing his adventures expanded beyond the comic book medium. Yet, he has not quite reached icon status among English-speaking audiences, especially considering his much more recent debut, originally exclusive to Italy.
The aforementioned writers of Conan and Dragonero, Luca Enoch and Stefano Vietti, created the dragon slayer, along with artist Giuseppe Matteoni, in 2007. His first appearance in a self-titled graphic novel from that year, which would be published in English by Dark Horse Comics two years later, begat a monthly ongoing series that launched in 2013 before the character was adapted into a video game.
The character, whose name translates to "black dragon," was known at birth as Ian Aranill, but earned his nickname from the dark color of his sword that he uses to take down reptilian, fire-breathing beasts. In fact, the blade became enchanted after he had slain such a creature, and he himself has magical powers from drinking the blood of a black dragon.
Dragonero has also been known to employ a team of allies to assist him on his many journeys in Erondár. However, he never crossed paths with anyone quite like Conan the Barbarian, and the same can be said about the latter.
Many of Conan's most notable crossover adventures in the comics have been with modern superhero characters, such as Thor and the X-Men. It is exciting to see the Cimerrian joining forces with someone far more his speed, like Dragonero.
Conan and Dragonero #1 goes on sale May 13, 2026.
