Tilda Swinton has starred in notable movies such as The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and won an Academy Award in 2008 for her performance in Michael Clayton. In 2005, she starred alongside Keanu Reeves in the supernatural superhero film Constantine.
More than 21 years after Constantine’s release, the movie is finding new life on HBO Max. Per FlixPatrol, the movie, which was loosely based on DC’s Hellblazer comics, is the No. 7 most-watched film on HBO Max, as of Jan. 5. It’s ahead of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Ex Machina, and Elevation, which sit in the No. 8, 9, and 10 spots, respectively.
Swinton, who is known for playing The Ancient One in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appeared in 2016’s Doctor Strange, 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, and voiced the character in 2021’s What If…? The Ancient One, in the MCU, was a Sorcerer Supreme and the leader of the Masters of the Mystic Arts and was known as the mentor of Doctor Stephen Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch.
In 2005’s Constantine, Swinton portrayed Gabriel, a “half-breed” archangel who schemes to free Mammon (Rachel Weisz) to unleash Hell on Earth. Reeves led the cast of Constantine as the titular John Constantine, an exorcist who becomes damned to hell after he attempts to end his own life, which is a mortal sin. The cast also includes Djimon Hounsou, Shia LaBeouf, and Gavin Rossdale.
Constantine was a hit when it was released over two decades ago, earning $230.9 million at the global box office against a budget of between $70 and $100 million. While it was a hit among fans, critically, the movie holds a “rotten” 46% on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans, however, have rated the movie a much more respectable 72% on the review aggregator.
Will Constantine Ever Get a Sequel?
Warner Bros. While Constantine continues to be a cult classic among fans, a sequel has been stuck in development for several years. Currently, Constantine 2 is listed as being in pre-production, per IMDb. In October 2025, Reeves, while promoting his movie Good Fortune, was asked if there were any updates on the Constantine sequel. He replied, “Fingers crossed. Another draft of the script came in. We're gonna take it to the studio, and hopefully they like it too,” he said at that time.
The sequel to Constantine was first announced back in 2022, with Reeves set to return as the titular hero and the original film’s director, Francis Lawrence, set to direct the second movie. Akiva Goldsman (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, A Beautiful Mind) is also attached to Constantine 2 as the writer.
Also, in October 2025, James Gunn, the head of the DCU, gave an update on the status of Constantine 2, per Collider. “I’ve discussed it on and off. I've discussed it with Keanu. I think that’s a great group of guys. I like all those people a lot, I think they’re talented. But I have not read any script yet,” Gunn said.
For now, fans of Constantine can stream the 2005 movie on HBO Max.
