Jason is an award-winning journalist whose writing career dates back to when he developed the ability to use a crayon. He, most notably, worked previously as a "professional fan," as he likes to call it, at CinemaBlend, for which he wrote about anything and everything under the pop culture umbrella... especially Batman. His passion for the art of cinema began even earlier, stemming from repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz.
This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.

Few comic books have endured a legacy of esteem and influence at the same level as Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. Thus, it is only fitting that, as it turns 40, the title is being honored with a one-of-a-kind celebration.

Fans can consider 2026 the year of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, as DC is going above and beyond to celebrate the groundbreaking comic's 40th anniversary.

This is a major milestone for the acclaimed graphic novel that brought Batman in his definitively dark and brooding form back to the mainstream, helped pave the way for comic books' acceptance as mature literature, and made author Frank Miller an undisputed living legend. The four-part story, released in 1986, follows an aged Bruce Wayne who comes out of retirement to clean up a worse-than-ever Gotham City with the help of teenage Carrie Kelly, who becomes his new Robin.

The following year, the comic would later inspire a prequel that Miller returned to write, in collaboration with illustrator David Mazzucchelli, called Batman: Year One. The gritty reimagining of Bruce Wayne's origins was certainly more warmly received than the author's 2001 direct sequel, The Dark Knight Strikes Again, which is considered one of the worst Batman comics of all time for its bizarre artwork and overstuffed plot.

Luckily, fans were more welcoming to 2015's Dark Knight III: The Master Race, as well as the many other prequels, one-shots, and miniseries taking place in the world of The Dark Knight Returns. Regardless of how its subsidiaries have been received, the original graphic novel remains one of Miller's most seminal and revered creations, deservedly earning a celebration that will last for much of 2026.

DC Comics has many exciting plans in store for its 40th anniversary celebration of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. Fans should mark their calendars for special events, commemorative re-releases, and awesome merchandise coming out throughout the year.

The festivities kick off on Friday, Feb. 20, when Frank Miller and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns illustrator Klaus Jansen appear at ComicsPro in Glendale, Calif., for a panel discussion acknowledging the impact that the comic has had on the industry in the last four decades. The event, open exclusively to ComicsPro members in-person or remotely through streaming, will be the first of many activations spotlighting the beloved creators and their achievements with this story.

Admirers of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns who missed out on experiencing the buzz surrounding it when it was first published as a series should be very pleased to learn about the upcoming facsimile editions. These are single-issue reprints of the story's four parts that even include their original covers, advertisements and back matter for an authentic recreation of the comic's serialized form in 1986.

On top of that, DC is releasing brand-new variant covers bearing and inspired by many of the most iconic images from the graphic novel. Comic book readers who are always on the go should also look out for Batman: The Dark Knight Returns: DC Compact Comics Edition, which recreates the book in a more portable and accessible size, and hits the shelves on April 7, 2026.

Of course, The Dark Knight Returns re-release that fans should be especially excited about is the 40th anniversary Deluxe Edition, which comes out on this year's Batman Day, Sept. 19. The book will be published as a hardcover and features newly remastered prints to ensure what is described as a "definitive way to experience one of the most influential graphic novels ever created."

In addition to reading material, there is plenty of fun swag that Dark Knight Returns fans can fashionably express their love for this story with. Commemorative items soon to be available at the online DC Shop include a special jacket, a limited art print created in collaboration with Sideshow Collectibles, graphics tees, a drop-shoulder hoodie, and a handy duffel bag.

There is even more merchandise and events as part of this celebration that have yet to be announced. There truly has never been a better time to be a fan of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. The celebration commences on Feb. 20, 2026.
