100 Bullets is officially coming back with a brand-new series starring one of the most terrifying Minutemen of all time.

Per a press release from DC Vertigo, the fan-favorite indie imprint is bringing back 100 Bullets with a brand-new series from creators Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso — 100 Bullets: The US of Anger. The first chapter of the eight-issue limited series will arrive in stores on July 1, and promises to be one of the bloodiest affairs that 100 Bullets fans have ever seen.

The official solicit synopsis for 100 Bullets: The US of Anger #1 from DC Vertigo reads, "Not many people made it out alive from the fall of the Trust in 100 Bullets. Lono did — just barely — and the years since have taken him far from home. His onetime protégé, Loop Hughes, was the only one smart enough to walk away clean."

The solicit text continues, "But tragedy has come knocking on Loop’s door, and the scent of blood has drawn a dangerous stray dog back across the border. Lono isn’t back to make peace. He’s back to make trouble. Lono is home again, and he’s hunting through a landscape of good ol’ boys and militias, megachurches, millionaires, and madmen."

100 Bullets' History In Comics

The original 100 Bullets debuted in 1999 and introduced readers to a world full of violence, crime, and mystery, the latter of which largely revolved around the history of and influence held by the Minutemen and the Trust. While the latter was a sprawling, clandestine organization comprised of some of the most powerful and wealthy families in the world, the former was a tight-knit band of cold-blooded killers whose sole purpose was to protect the Trust before a schism between the two kicked off the main events of the series.

Since its release, 100 Bullets has become a key fixture in the world of comics, not to mention a cult classic powerhouse unto itself in the wider realm of pop culture. Numerous attempts to adapt the series have been made by various video game, TV, and feature film studios, with Hollywood icon Tom Hardy even being attached to a 100 Bullets adaptation as producer and star back in 2015. Unfortunately, none of these have come to fruition.

Lono is by far one of the most dreaded figures in the 100 Bullets universe. A former Minuteman who was lucky enough to simply not be present for the events that took place in Atlantic City in the main series, Lono has been portrayed as one of the absolute worst characters imaginable. Lono is also a seemingly unstoppable force of nature unto himself, and has come back from what would otherwise be lethal wounds only to embark upon some astounding endeavors.

As noted by the DC Vertigo press release for 100 Bullets: The US of Anger, "In Brother Lono, the titular character tried and failed to save his own soul. In The US of Anger, he becomes something far more dangerous: a catalyst for the demons already lurking in America's shadow... Vertigo was built on stories that cut deep. The US of Anger is exactly that kind of story."

100 Bullets: The US of Anger #1 from DC Vertigo goes on sale on July 1.
