This article contains major spoilers for DC K.O. #4.
Whoa. To say things are getting off to a historic start in 2026 is one hell of an understatement, and it's largely thanks to some good folks over at DC Comics deciding it's time to shake things up, and in ways that rattle the very core of comic book canon.
Recently, it's been discovered, though also heavily debated, that Batman finally killed The Joker, though some have an alternate take on what happened between The Dark Knight and The Clown Prince of Crime in that particular scene in DC K.O. #4. What can not be argued, denied or spun, however, is what happened between Lex Luthor and Superman, seeing as it just changed everything between the two.
Courtesy of DC ComicsFirst, a quick recap. The DC K.O. tournament is predicated upon each super-powered combatant, permitted to use a weapon of their choice, fighting to the death with the hopes of toppling Darkseid in his mission to create a new Apokolips. The winner of the tournament will gain omnipotence and that includes the ability to bring anyone back from the dead they so choose.
In the latest installment, orchestrated by Scott Snyder, Joshua Williamson, Xermánico, and Javier Fernández, the three broke a DC Comics rule that's stood firm for 86 years: Lex Luthor just killed Superman.
Lex Luthor Actually Killed Superman — No, Seriously
Courtesy of DC ComicsThis was hinted at by the blatant absence of Superman in the latest DC Comics solicits, by the way.
Is it the first time the Man of Steel has met his demise? Well, no and yes. He's been defeated on several occasions, most notably by Doomsday in The Death of Superman, but it's been demonstrated time and again that Kal-El never truly dies, but rather is beaten into a state of catatonia that allows his body to slowly heal before returning from the supposed grave.
But, this time, he's as dead as a doornail, and at the hands of his most bitter and longstanding foe, Lex Luthor.
As you can see in the panels above, this issue of DC K.O. reaches a climactic point after Luthor, Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman remain as the lone challengers in the tournament and, eventually, only Luther and Superman are standing as Omega King Darkseid watches on — the Dawnsday Knuckles and some outright rage helping to power the Son of El this far in the fight.
Darkseid vs. Lex Luthor for Control of the Universe
Image via DC ComicsBut Darkseid isn't interested in anything more than a head-to-head battle for supremacy, and refuses to move a muscle in the face of Luthor and Supes, instead complimenting Superman for withstanding his Omega Beam and, in the process, blocking it from obliterating Luthor, only to then tell him, "I'm waiting."
Clearly, Luthor and Superman interpreted that statement differently. Clark called upon Luthor to join him in taking down Darkseid, but the latter had no intentions of being a tag partner, and that's when it happens: Luthor hits Superman with a megablast from his suit, killing him instantly and claiming victory in the tournament.
As Luthor prepares to take on Darkseid for the power of the universe, DC Comics fans are left stunned. Anyone who believed Superman would take the DC K.O. crown by default just got a brutal wake-up call that nothing was ever going to be predictable in this tournament; and for the first time in history, Luthor can not only lay claim to defeating Superman ... but to outright murdering him.
