One of the most beloved Disney characters of the past forty years has been Aladdin. After launching his blockbuster 1992 film, Aladdin then starred in two hit direct-to-video sequels, as well as a hit animated series. Aladdin also starred in THREE separate video games based on the hit film. Then, in 2019, Aladdin became an even bigger sensation with a live action film adaptation of the original film grossing over a BILLION dollars at the box office.
Well, after all of these adventures in other media, Aladdin is finally making his way to the world of comic books, as well, with a brand-new ongoing comic book series for Dynamite Entertainment that will be launching in May!
Who is the creative team of the new series?
The new series will be written by James III (Good Burger 2, Fairy OddParents: A New Wish, All That) , who previously wrote for the Stitch series for Dynamite Entertainment. The series will be drawn by Italian artist, Agnese Eterno (Italian artists have a long and storied history with Disney comic books).
The covers for the issue will be provided by Nicoletta Baldari and Natacha Bustos for the two main covers and variants, plus a Jafar spotlight cover by superstar artist, J. Scott Campbell, and a Genie spotlight variant by Eterno. There will also be a Blank Authentix variant cover that fans can use to get sketches done on the cover at conventions. In addition, Dynamite will be doing a Blind Bag variant for the issue, and it will tie into the whole "genie" concept of Aladdin by having a magic lamp on the cover of the bag, and you will receive three variants (instead of wishes) inside.
What does the writer of the series have to say about the new Aladdin comic?
In a press release for the comic book's announcement, Dynamite Entertainment noted the basic plot of the new series, which is:
Everyone's favorite diamond in the rough, Aladdin, is on top of the world as this new comic series starts. The former street rat is united with his love, Princess Jasmine. He's got his trusty buddies Abu and the magical carpet. While Genie is free of his lamp and able to do as he wishes. But trouble always seems to haunt Al, and he'll need the help of everyone he loves to save himself and the entire city of Agrabah!
In addition, James III made a statement about the series in the press release, "Writing Aladdin is an opportunity I don't take lightly. Not to be old, but the Aladdin VHS was one of the few tapes we owned growing up and we wore it out! I'd run around the house imitating Genie and Iago (for which I later won the 3rd grade talent show, thank you very much!) And my light-up Jafar staff was a prized possession. We're doing our best to capture the flare of the original while telling new stories for today's audience."
Aladdin #1 is set to be released in May.
