One of the most innovative comic book editors of all-time was Archie Goodwin, who was the early creative force on Warren Magazine's black and white comic book magazines in the mid-1960s. These EC-esque black and white stories were of such a high level of quality that the rest of the comic book industry marveled at what Goodwin accomplished. Stan Lee hired Goodwin to write for Marvel before the 1960s ended, and Goodwin would later become an acclaimed Marvel and DC editor (briefly Marvel's Editor-in-Chief, even).

Years later, another innovative comic book editor, Mark Chiarello, took inspiration from Goodwin to create Batman: Black and White, a miniseries done in black and white to honor the work that Goodwin did on those early Warren books. Since then, it has become a tradition in the comic book industry for comic book companies to have their best creators routinely work on black and white anthologies, although Matt Wagner added a touch of "blood" for his Grendel version, and Marvel has leaned into that idea, as well, with blood being part of its Black and White anthologies, and now, Marvel is doing a Marvel: Black, White, Blood, and Guts miniseries filled with gory horror stories.

In a CBR exclusive preview of next week's Marvel: Black, White, Blood and Guts #4, we see a glimpse of the three stories featured in the comic, by some of the top Marvel talent today!

• First! You’ll find yourself experiencing bibliophobia after a skin-crawling story from MARK WAID and JORGE FORNÉS starring the one and only DOCTOR STRANGE and a spell so malevolent and dangerous, even he cannot control it!

• THEN! Rising star VICTOR LaVALLE has penned a script for artist BRUNO BÜLL, making his Marvel debut! The Marvel U is the world outside your window, and in keeping with the holiday season, this story is set on NEW YEAR’S EVE! Starring the classic DEFENDERS, this is one story that’s sure to be a SMASH!

32 PGS./Parental Advisory …$3.99

In the preview pages, we see Mark Waid and Jorge Fornés depict a dangerous spell that is turning Doctor Strange's memories of all the pain he caused for others due to his arrogance and bad will into ACTUAL violence, and if Wong doesn't help Strange get out of this spell, it will be a blood bath.

Next, we see Anthony Oliviera and Javier Pulido do a fascinating riff on Alfred, Lord Tennyson's iconic line, "Nature, red in tooth and claw."

Finally, Victor LaValle, Bruno Büll, and Rachelle Rosenberg tell a story featuring the Defenders on New Year's Eve, 1979, as the 1970s turn into the 1980s, and the Defenders suddenly become a bit out of their era.

Joe Sabino lettered it all! If these preview pages wetted your whistle, be sure to pick up a copy of Marvel: Black, White, Blood and Guts #4 next week!
