Toho International and Pabst Blue Ribbon announced yesterday that the two companies are teaming up to put the popular monster on millions of cans and boxes across the U.S. For the Kaiju’s 70th birthday celebration, PBR is switching out its iconic Blue Ribbon can design for original new Godzilla-themed cans this fall, ensuring that it will loom large on over 60 million cans and boxes.
Speaking about Toho and PBR’s collaboration, Kristin Parcell, General Manager of Toho International, said, “At Toho International, we’re always looking for innovative ways to expand Godzilla’s presence in culture. Partnering with Pabst Blue Ribbon, a historic brand with a rich legacy and passionate following fit for the King of Monsters, allows us to engage fans in a fresh and dynamic way.”
The PBR and Godzilla will collide on the American brewer’s official cans and boxes, which will feature a bold black-and-white design that’s both collectible and unforgettable. This October, the Godzilla design will take over PBR cans and boxes, except for the 25-oz single-serve cans, which go even bigger with three additional Attack Peter‘s Kaiju designs. Select Godzilla cans will also feature a limited-edition blue atomic breath effect, which will turn blue when perfectly chilled.
“The Godzilla cans are an evolution of Pabst’s long-standing art can series and will feature four unique cans from the towering Mechagodzilla to the three-headed King Ghidorah and flying Mothra to The King of Monsters Godzilla, every can’s intricate backdrop, inspired by Japanese mythology, tells its own story,” per the official PR. “For the Godzilla designs, Pabst tapped official Godzilla artist, Attack Peter, using his signature hard-carved linoleum block print technique.”
Attack Peter (Peter Santa-Maria) is known for his work at Mondo, Marvel, and Sideshow, and is the in-house artist at Skybound. The Cuban-American artist is known for his bold, hand-carved linoleum block prints and collectible figure designs, working with iconic projects and franchises like Godzilla, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Alien, and Friday the 13th.
“Bringing the legendary Godzilla character into PBR’s world is massive on its own, but teaming up with Attack Peter on the designs completely leveled this partnership up. His style and process of hand-carving these illustrations continues to push the boundaries of what the PBR art series is all about,” said Rachel Keeton, Senior Brand Director – Pabst Blue Ribbon.
Attack Petter added, “The King of the Monsters has smashed open so many doors for me, and today is a continuation of that epic journey! I’m so incredibly fortunate to work alongside Toho International and Pabst Blue Ribbon to bring my linoleum block print designs honoring Godzilla, Mothra, Mechagodzilla, and King Ghidorah from my studio in Miami into your coolers, parties, and anywhere else that calls for a monster-sized celebration!”
