Hellboy is officially heading to a new streaming home next month. It's even bringing its fan-favorite sequel along for the ride.
Fans have less than two weeks left to wait before both 2004's Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army arrive on Peacock as their next streaming home. Both films will be available for streaming on Peacock beginning July 1, and will be arriving on the platform alongside a whole host of other genre favorites such as Red, Van Helsing, and Alita: Battle Angel.
The Rise and Fall of the Hellboy Feature Film Franchise — Explained
Written and directed by the legendary Guillermo del Toro, Hellboy arrived in theaters in 2004 and introduced Mike Mignola's Dark Horse Comics icon to a wider audience than ever before. The film starred Ron Perlman as the titular Hellboy, a literal demon summoned as an infant by unwitting Nazis, only to be rescued by US forces and trained as the greatest hero the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Development (BPRD) has ever known.
Alongside Perlman, Hellboy starred Selma Blair as Liz Sherman, Doug Jones as Abe Sapien (voiced by David Hyde Pierce), John Hurt as Professor "Broom" Bruttenholm, Brian Steele as Sammael, Jeffrey Tambor as Rom Manning, Rupert Evans as John Myers, and Karel Roden as Grigori Rasputin. Although Hellboy only grossed $99.8 million at the box office against a more than $65 million budget, the film still garnered a sequel in the form of 2008's Hellboy II: The Golden Army.
The second film in the series brought back Perlman, Blair, Jones and Pierce, Hurt, and Tambor for another fantastical adventure. Like the first film, Hellboy II: The Golden Army was met with rave reviews, and even surpassed its predecessor's success by grossing more than $168 million against an $85 million budget. Unfortunately, a third Del Toro Hellboy movie never made its way into production, nor did any of the multiple planned spinoffs once the David Harbour-led 2019 reboot went into production.
What's Next for Dark Horse Comics' Hellboy?
Image via Dark Horse ComicsMost recently, Hellboy was seen on the silver screen as portrayed by Jack Kesy in the 2024 reboot, Hellboy: The Crooked Man, which was lauded for its graphic kills and eerie ambience, all while being widely derided by just about every other measure. This effectively marked the end of the Hellboy feature film franchise, at least until a third attempt at a reboot is made, though it still isn't nearly enough to keep Hellboy down entirely.
Dark Horse Comics only recently unveiled the franchise's next limited series, Hellboy in Hell: Nothing but Blood, which will bring the character back to one of his most harrowing eras. Set just after the events of Hellboy in Hell #8 during which Hellboy was forced to deal with a demonic trial while simultaneously hunting for some way of staving off a supernatural disease, Hellboy in Hell: Nothing but Blood will see the infernal hero take it upon himself to try and rescue a lonesome young girl who is caught in the middle of a violent uprising in the bowels of Hell itself.
Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army will both be available for streaming on Peacock beginning July 1.
