The X-Men have finally arrived in the latest teaser trailer for Avengers: Doomsday. Fox's iconic mutant team returns for another adventure, this time as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The newest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday focuses on the X-Men. The camera pans through a wrecked X-Mansion as the voice of Magneto (Ian McKellen) pontificates about the nature of death and legacy. He decides that the real question isn't when or how someone dies, but "who you are when you close your eyes." Viewers then see an aged Magneto sitting beside Professor Charles Xavier (James Marsden), sharing a friendly but somber moment. Finally, Cyclops (James Marsden) is seen in a dramatic moment, as fire and ash rain down around him. He lets out a wild scream, removes his goggles, and launches his laser beam at an unseen enemy as the trailer ends with a promise that the X-Men will return in Avengers: Doomsday.
This is the third Avengers: Doomsday trailer to surface online, with each focusing on a character or group who will play a major role in the upcoming crossover film. The first revealed the return of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, who will come out of retirement to join the fight against Doctor Doom. The second focuses on Chris Hemsworth's Thor, who offers up a solemn prayer to his father, Odin, in hopes of surviving the coming battle. Now, audiences finally get their first look at the X-Men, who will play a major role in the upcoming film.
Professor Xavier, Magneto, and Cyclops won't be the only mutants returning from the X-Men franchise. Kelsey Grammer is set to return as Beast after his cameo in the post-credits scene of The Marvels. Additionally, Rebecca Romijn and Alan Cumming are both set to return as Mystique and Nightcrawler, respectively. Channing Tatum, who portrays the mutant Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, will also return in Doomsday, marking his first appearance alongside the X-Men. Other iconic mutants, including Deadpool and Wolverine, are also rumored to return, but have not yet been confirmed as cast members.
Avengers: Doomsday Could Finally Do Justice to the X-Men
Image via 20th Century Fox/Everett CollectionAvengers: Doomsday marks the first appearance of the X-Men team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Many of the characters confirmed to return in the film, including James Marsden's Cyclops and Alan Cumming's Nightcrawler, haven't been seen in over a decade. From what little information Marvel has revealed about the X-Men's role in Doomsday, it is already clear that the film is doing a better job of representing the mutant team than their original franchise ever did.
One of the biggest changes from the X-Men franchise to Doomsday involves the mutants' iconic superhero suits. The original movies usually avoided depicting their characters in comic-accurate costumes, instead relying on black leather outfits that lack character and color. Doomsday's latest trailer offers a sneak peek at Professor X's comics-accurate jumper and Cyclops's iconic blue and yellow suit, which already looks much better than anything the character wore in the original Fox franchise. Leaks from the set of Doomsday suggest that all of the X-Men will get their comic-accurate superhero suits in the film, repairing one of the worst creative decisions from the X-Men movies.
Doomsday also marks an important first for the superhero genre in that it will be the first movie in history to include Marvel's three most iconic teams: the Avengers, the X-Men, and The Fantastic Four. Until Disney's Fox acquisition, putting these three teams together on the big screen was impossible due to licensing agreements and rights issues. Now, the full scale of the Marvel universe can finally be put on display, allowing the three superhero teams to play against one another in a way that fans have only dreamed about for decades.
The upcoming Avengers film will most likely be the final outing for Fox's X-Men characters. Their return offers a chance for Marvel to give these legacy characters a final swan song, honoring the past before paving a new future. The X-Men are set for a full reboot in Phase 7, beginning with Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier's untitled film, which is expected to release in 2028. Besides a possible appearance in 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars, the X-Men's upcoming role in Doomsday will most likely be the last chance for Marvel fans to say goodbye to the iconic superhero team before they are finally rebooted in the MCU.
Marvel Studios reportedly plans to release a new teaser trailer in theaters each week, leading up to the first full trailer in February. Each new trailer will focus on another cast member from Avengers: Doomsday, potentially including some who haven't been announced yet. The X-Men are just the latest team to get the teaser trailer treatment, but fans should remain on the lookout for more on the horizon.
Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
