BRZRKR, the comic book series created by Keanu Reeves about an immortal half-human, half-God warrior, is set to make its triumphant return later this year. A new spinoff comic has officially been announced.

IGN reports that Reeves has reunited with author China Miéville for BRZRKR: Light Draws Breath #1. The latest in the franchise's several spinoffs, Light Draws Breath is set earlier in the immortal warrior's lifetime than the main series, taking a look at his battles through the Bronze Age. The issue explores "what happens when B temporarily dies, and part of his protoplasmic body is harvested by rogue scientists. The resulting creation will have to learn who it is and what its place in the world is meant to be." Light Draws Breath #1 goes on sale May 20.

Keanu Reeves' New Comics Story Expands BRZRKR's Violent World

Fans of Reeves are likely to be pleased that a new BRZRKR spinoff is on the way, even if they haven't read the main comics yet. The franchise has been a hit since its inception, praised for its stunning artwork and high-stakes violence — similar to Reeves' on-screen roles like John Wick. The franchise's protagonist, B, also bears a striking similarity to Reeves himself.

A preview of Light Draws Breath #1 reveals just how dangerous B's Bronze Age exploits will be when the issue arrives in May. Cover art shows the warrior battling dangerous monsters, while concept art by Alessio Avalone reveals a shocking transformation might be on the way. Lastly, uncolored interior pages hint at a darkness waiting in the issue's ancient civilization.

Light Draws Breath #1 sees the return of Miéville, who previously co-wrote the 2024 spinoff novel The Story of Elsewhere. For the comic, Miéville co-writes with Reeves once more, with Avalone on art and a main cover by Esad Ribic. Ronald Wimberly, David Lafuente, Dillon Snook and Sweeny Boo will provide variant covers, which are expected to be unveiled at a later date.

BRZRKR Outsold Star Wars With Its Debut Issue

BRZRKR's supernatural action-packed story debuted with Boom! Studios in 2021, with the mainline series running for 12 issues. Before it even hit comic book shops, the series was already off to a great start, where it had raised more than $1.4 million in funding through Kickstarter. With its first issue, BRZRKR quickly proved that Reeves' fans were excited about his comic creation, and BRZRKR #1 sold 615,000 copies — making it the top-selling single issue since Star Wars #1 in 2015.

Over the years, BRZRKR has been collected in three volumes as well as a special Deluxe Edition Omnibus which collects all 12 issues. Several spinoff comics have followed with Reeves returning to co-write them, including 2024's Bloodlines, The Lost Book of B and A Faceful of Bullets.

The continued success of BRZRKR has seen Hollywood eager to explore Reeves' creation beyond the pages of the comic books. In 2021, Netflix announced a planned live-action film adaptation and an anime series, with Reeves reportedly cast as the lead. Mattson Tomlin (Terminator Zero) is set to pen the live-action film's script, with it being announced in March 2025 that Fast & Furious's Justin Lin would direct and produce.

BRZRKR: Light Draws Breath #1 will be released on May 20, 2026, and is available for pre-order now.
