An expert on obscure productions from the ’80s and ’90s, John is known for his encyclopedic recall of cult classics like Beetleborgs.

The writer of one of the hottest Star Wars titles of the decade just quietly promised a sequel series, allegedly.

In a recent addition to his Substack newsletter, Star Wars: The Legacy of Vader — The Reign of Kylo Ren writer Charles Soule offered readers a tongue-in-cheek take on his own series, as well as tacit confirmation of a follow-up yet to come. "What the h*ll kind of a series ender is that? What was I thinking? That's terribly inconclusive and unsatisfying," Soule wrote. "Who conceived of such a thing?"

The post continues to self-satirize. "The writer should be fired! (Though the incredible artist Luke Ross, colorist Nolan Woodard and letterer Joe Caramagna should get plum gigs until the end of time.)," Soule continued. "I hope we find out what all that means someday. IF ANYTHING. You know these writer types, thinking they're cooler than they are, pulling these dumb tricks when readers just want a cool story. Anyway."

Soule went on to highlight the success of the first collected edition of the series, writing, "The appropriately-named LEGACY OF VADER: THE REIGN OF KYLO REN VOL. 1 is doing gangbusters numbers. Pretty great to hear. I think the work we all did here is some top-tier storytelling, and it's great that word has spread, and the audience is growing for it."

What Is Star Wars: Legacy of Vader About?

Star Wars: Legacy of Vader kicked off in February 2025 with the series' first issue. Set between the events of 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi and 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the hit comic book series follows Kylo Ren as he traverses the Galaxy in his journey to Mustafar, the harsh, cragged world where Darth Vader studied ancient Sith practices and honed his skills, strength, and dedication to the Dark Side.

Over the course of the series, Kylo Ren uncovered deeper secrets and more unsettling truths than he ever could have expected to find, many of which forced him to confront his own personal shortcomings. In the series' epic finale, Kylo Ren was forced to confront the Jedi he could have been, if only he hadn't given in to the anguish and hatred that define so much of his character. The final issue of Star Wars: Legacy of Vader also promised that Kylo Ren would be returning, albeit without any firm indication of when that would be or under what circumstances.

Since its release, many fans have looked to Star Wars: Legacy of Vader to serve as something of a replacement for the Ben Solo spinoff feature that was ultimately canceled. The film, tentatively titled The Hunt for Ben Solo, would have been directed by Steven Soderbergh, who himself previously stated, "I really enjoyed making the movie in my head. I’m just sorry the fans won’t get to see it.”

Star Wars star and Kylo Ren actor Adam Driver also previously discussed what the film would have entailed, as well as exactly why it was shot down. According to Driver, "We took it to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman, and they said no. They didn’t see how Ben Solo was alive. And that was that."

Star Wars: Legacy of Vader can be purchased wherever comics are sold.
