Almost as soon as Tomb Raider become a cultural sensation with the release of the original 1996 video game, it was clear that Lara Croft was just the type of visually striking adventure character that would translate well to the world of comics, and that became the case when the Tomb Raider ongoing series launched from Top Cow in 1999 at Image Comics.

Originally written and drawn by superstar creators Dan Jurgens and Andy Park, the series ran for 50 issues between 1999-2005. In 2014, following the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot of the video game series, the character returned to comic books in a new series written by Gail Simone for Dark Horse Comics. The most recent ongoing series was also at Dark Horse in 2016 from two-time Eisner Award-winning Best Writer, Mariko Tamaki.

Now, Lara Croft is back to comics for a new miniseries, Tomb Raider: Sacred Artifacts, from writer Casey Gilly, artist Antonio Di Caprio, colorist Eren Angiolini, letterer AndWorld Design, all behind a stunning Taurin Clarke cover.

What happens in the preview pages of Tomb Raider: Sacred Artifacts?

In the current Tomb Raider continuity, Lara Croft is the daughter of Amelia and Richard Croft, two very famous and rich archeologists who took her on some of their adventures as a child. Her mother disappeared on one of those trips, and was declared dead. Her father died by suicide a few years later.

To the rest of the world, Lara Croft is simply a socialite daughter of two famous explorers, and that is the facade we see her keep up in the preview page, as she gives an interview to a British celebrity journalist. When the interviewer noticed that Lara has a cut, we then see a flashback and see that Lara received the cut on an adventure.

We then cut back to Lara continuing her facade of simply being a society maven, but we see that she, of course, has been involved in a number of adventures, and in this series, her worlds collide a bit when her family home is badly damaged in a fire, leading off to another mysterious adventure.

Tomb Raider: Sacred Artifacts #1 is on sale next week.
