The following contains major spoilers for X-Men #23, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

The best shot the X-Men had of preventing the Age of Revelation just kicked off the next war for the future of the Marvel Universe.

X-Men #23 (by Jed MacKay, Tony Daniel, Mark Morales, Fer Sifuentes-Sujo, and VC's Clayton Cowles) marks a major turning point for the fight against Revelation, as the consciousness of the future Cyclops is sent back to replace his past self and assassinate Revelation before the heir to Apocalypse's reign can begin. Unfortunately, it is this very failed attempt to prevent the Age of Revelation that has just cemented its rise in the first place.

The official solicit synopsis for X-Men #23 from Marvel Comics reads, "AGE OF REVELATION EPILOGUE! One X-Man of the present has been stranded in the Age of Revelation, fighting against impossible odds in the world of tomorrow. But while they’ve been there, what has their future counterpart been doing in their body in the present?"

Set approximately ten years into the future, the Age of Revelation was ushered in by the former New Mutant known as Doug Ramsey, aka Cypher, who was transformed into the hulking Revelation after being chosen to carry Apocalypse's legacy forward for all of mutantkind. After the world was ravaged by a deadly X-Virus, Revelation established near-total dominance over the majority of North America.

To make matters worse, the Age of Revelation is every bit the ill portent it appears to be. As explained by Executive Editor and Conductor of X for Marvel Comics Tom Brevoort, "These are all legitimate futures. This isn't a What If world. These things exist, as far as even the present-day characters are concerned. So, you’ll see a certain amount of reflectivity in what happens."

With the conclusion of the Age of Revelation, Marvel Comics' readers are on the verge of stepping into the Shadows of Tomorrow, which stands as the first major Marvel crossover event of the year. The Shadows of Tomorrow will begin in the pages of Uncanny X-Men, X-Men, and Wolverine before spilling over into seven new titles.

Of these seven new titles, three are new limited series, including Rogue by writer Erica Schultz and artist Luigi Zagaria, Magik & Colossus by writer Ashley Allen and artist German Peralta, and Cyclops by writer Alex Paknadel and artist Roge Antonio. The other four upcoming titles are all slated to play out as ongoing series, and include Inglorious X-Force by writer Tim Seeley and artist Michael Sta. Maria, Wade Wilson: Deadpool by writer Benjamin Percy and artist Geoff Shaw, Generation X-23 by writer Jody Houser and artist Jacopo Camigni, and Storm: Earth's Mightiest Mutant by writer Murewa Ayodele and artist Federica Mancin.

Since their debut in 1963, Marvel's X-Men have been more than just another superhero team. While the team really hit its stride as the All New, All Different X-Men in 1975, Marvel's heroic mutants have always operated as super-outcasts, protecting a world that hates and fears them for their powers.

Key members of the X-Men include Professor X, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Wolverine, Iceman, Beast, Rogue, and Storm. Often framed as the world's second strongest superheroes, after the Avengers, they are nonetheless one of Marvel's most popular and important franchises.
