"Man of Tomorrow" Production Begins as James Gunn Teases Lex Luthor in Prison
Posted on April 20, 2026 by Neil Cole
Production has officially commenced on "Man of Tomorrow", the next chapter in DC Studios' evolving Superman narrative, with filmmaker James Gunn returning to write and direct the highly anticipated sequel. The film builds on the momentum of 2025's "Superman" and continues the studio's broader cinematic universe expansion under its "Gods and Monsters" storytelling slate.
With filming now underway, Gunn marked the occassion by sharing an on-set image via his official Instagram channel offering multiple narrative teases. The photo includes visual nods to the film's evolving storyline - most notably a chessboard arrangement symbolizing strategic conflict, an inmate badge tied to Lex Luthor at Van Kull Prison, and a bag of Ruffles chips, a subtle behind-the-scenes detail that has already drawn fan attention.
Also visible in the background of the image is a production slate revealing the film's first official logo design. The emblem merges Superman's iconic "S" shield with the familiar three-pronged insignia associated with the hyper-intelligent and calculating villain Brainiac, offering the first visual indication of the cosmic-level antagonist's presence in the sequel.
David Corenswet returns as Clark Kent/Superman, with Nicholas Hoult reprising his role as Lex Luthor. The sequel reportedly places Superman and Luthor in an uneasy alliance, as the two are forced to confront the far greater threat of Brainiac as portrayed by actor Lars Eidinger.
The expanding cast continues to build out DC Studios' interconnected universe. Adria Arjona joins as Maxima, a complex character from DC Comics lore who has alternated between adversary and ally to Superman. She is joined by Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Aaron Pierre as John Stewart/Green Lantern, and André Royo in a yet to be announced role.
With "Man of Tomorrow", DC Studios continues to position Superman at the center of its long-term cinematic roadmap, blending grounded character dynamics with large-scale, cosmic storytelling. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on July 9, 2027 with additional production details and casting updates expected as filming progresses.
