Marvel Studios is driving intense excitement at the box office this year as fans brace for the arrival of Avengers: Doomsday, the first Avengers film since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. The upcoming blockbuster will unite the most star-packed cast in superhero history, spotlighting Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom. It serves as the first half of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga finale, with Avengers: Secret Wars set to follow one year later.
Marvel had initially planned to release Avengers: Doomsday in May 2025 before pushing it to May 2026. The studio later shifted again, landing on Dec. 18 for a major holiday-season premiere. That move put the film in rare company as only the second MCU release to debut in December following Spider-Man: No Way Home, which pulled in over $1.9 billion worldwide and cemented its spot as the biggest solo superhero film ever.
Rumors are now circulating that Marvel may move the date up by one week to Dec. 11. According to one industry insider, the studio is weighing this adjustment after Sony Pictures moved Dwayne Johnson’s untitled Jumanji sequel from Dec. 11 to Christmas Day, leaving that weekend wide open for Marvel to take advantage.
If the shift happens, Avengers: Doomsday would stand alone as December’s only major theatrical release that weekend. The current Dec. 18 date pits it against Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three, which already has a one-week lock on IMAX screens starting that same day. Fans have even coined the term “Dunesday” to describe the clash between the two cinematic heavyweights. Moving the Marvel film up could protect its global IMAX rollout and help maximize early ticket sales.

From a business standpoint, the decision is clear. A Dec. 11 release gives Marvel the holiday advantage while clearing space for full IMAX access before the competition sets in. Every previous Avengers entry has earned between $1.4 billion and $2.9 billion worldwide, making Doomsday virtually guaranteed to succeed. Its marketing effort backs that up, with four theatrical-first trailers pulling in a combined one billion online views. That sets a new benchmark for Marvel’s digital reach, surpassing trailers for Deadpool and Wolverine and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
As of now, no official confirmation has been made by Marvel Studios on a date change. With eight months remaining before release, anticipation continues to rise for what could become the most dominant movie event of the decade. Avengers: Doomsday is currently set to hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
