Marvel Studios may have more plans for Wolverine after the success of Deadpool & Wolverine reignited fan interest in the X-Men last year. New reports suggest the studio is developing a solo Wolverine project as part of its next slate of Marvel Cinematic Universe releases. Insiders say the project could follow Avengers: Doomsday in 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027, both of which are expected to feature several returning X-Men stars.
Daniel Richtman, a well-known industry insider, reported that a Wolverine-centered production is in early development at Marvel. He did not specify whether it would appear as a Disney+ Special Presentation or a theatrical release. What he did confirm is that the project will not be alone. New mutant-focused stories and a full X-Men reboot are also in development, with Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier attached to the rebooted X-Men film.

The speculation gained traction after scooper My Time To Shine Hello shared that Marvel plans to release a new Wolverine movie with Hugh Jackman reprising his role. Jackman made his official MCU debut in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which became one of the year’s biggest box office hits. A new solo story would extend that momentum and possibly allow Jackman’s version of Logan to bridge the old and new generations of mutants.

Evidence of Marvel’s next moves appeared online in mid-December when fans discovered a “Wolverine” trademark filing on Justia Trademarks. The application listed categories such as “motion picture films” and “multimedia entertainment content.” It included an official-looking logo, suggesting Marvel is positioning the character for a fresh standalone push.
For now, Marvel has confirmed only one X-Men movie in active development under Schreier’s direction. That film will reportedly rebuild the team within the MCU. Legacy actors from Fox’s long-running X-Men saga are also set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday and later in Avengers: Secret Wars. Their presence could open the door for new stories while keeping ties to the franchise history.
Jackman’s involvement may not stop there. Sources note Marvel could produce an R-rated Special Presentation centered on Wolverine, following a model similar to Jon Bernthal’s return as the Punisher in 2026. The project could explore Wolverine’s solo path, either in the multiverse setting of Deadpool & Wolverine or in the main MCU timeline of Earth-616. Analysts say Marvel may see this as a way to replicate the grounded tone and success of Jackman’s original Wolverine trilogy.

Another option for the studio is a theatrical feature focusing solely on Logan. Such a film might act as a prequel or continuation, depending on where the new Avengers stories leave the character. Longtime fans speculate it could revisit key comic-inspired settings like Madripoor, offering a mix of nostalgia and expansion for the mutant storyline.
Jackman has remained careful in his public comments. He has not confirmed whether he will continue playing Wolverine, but his remarks about enjoying his latest appearance hint at an open door. “It’s been incredible,” he told reporters after filming Deadpool & Wolverine. His tone, as some observers note, suggests he may not be ready to hang up the claws just yet.
Marvel Studios has not commented on the rumors. But given Wolverine’s renewed popularity and the X-Men’s upcoming return, few expect the character to fade anytime soon. Analysts say the trend is far from over.
