Jason is an award-winning journalist whose writing career dates back to when he developed the ability to use a crayon. He, most notably, worked previously as a "professional fan," as he likes to call it, at CinemaBlend, for which he wrote about anything and everything under the pop culture umbrella... especially Batman. His passion for the art of cinema began even earlier, stemming from repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz.
This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.

The most wonderful thing about variant covers is not that they simply allow artists to contribute additional artwork for a beloved character. It is that they allow artists to completely reimagine these characters from scratch.

Marvel Comics is known for leaning hard into this opportunity by releasing variant covers that paint famous heroes and villains in a refreshing new light. This year, the publisher is putting out a new series of alternative artworks that are going further by imagining these icons in a whole new setting.

Marvel's Isekai Variant Covers Are Out Of This World

The term "isekai" is derived from a Japanese word that, when translated to English, means either "different world" or "another world." Bringing popular Marvel Comics characters into a different world is precisely the goal of the publisher's new line of Isekai Variant Covers.

The fantastic (in the literal definition of the word) alternative artwork comes courtesy of the talents from the latest class of Marvel's Stormbreakers. It is a program that was launched in 2020, and derived from Marvel's Young Guns program, to spotlight the most notable up-and-coming visual creators in the comic book industry today.

Stormbreakers contributing to the Isekai Variant Covers line include the likes of Simone Di Meo of X-Men of Apocalypse fame, Ultimate Wolverine's Alessandro Cappuccio, X-Men artist Netho Diaz, and Juan Frigeri, who is known for his work on Ultimates. The line-up also includes the Eisner Award-winning duo known as Gurihiru, Jonas Scharf from Ultimate Endgame, Wade Wilson: Deadpool artist Geoff Shaw, and Luciano Vecchio of Uncanny X-Men fame.

The last major project that the current class of Marvel's Stormbreakers worked on was a series of variant covers inspired by What If...? The showcase was part of a celebration honoring the 50th anniversary of the anthology comic book series reimagining key characters and events from the Marvel Universe.

Marvel's Isekai Variant Covers Reimagine Spider-Man, X-Men, And More

The first wave of Marvel's line of Isekai Variant Covers are a sight to behold. Fans of both the comic book publishing giant and of anime-style fantasy adventures alike will not be able to get enough of these pieces.

For his cover for Jeff the Land Shark: Superstar #2, which goes on sale Aug. 12, Simone Di Meo keeps the titular aquatic animal's design traditional, at least in the foreground. Seen behind the cuddly apex predator is what seems to be how he imagines himself as a gargantuan warrior, which closely resembles a much larger depiction of DC's King Shark.

Despite being credited by co-creator Kelly Thompson as helping popularize Jeff the Land Shark, Japanese artist duo Gurihiru, consisting of penciler and inker Chifuyu Sasaki and colorist Naoko Kawano, went in a different direction for their Marvel Isekai Variant Cover. For Mary Jane: Face It, Tiger #1, a one-shot celebrating 60 years of Spider-Man's most iconic love interest that comes out Aug. 5, the artists depict the spunky redhead as an elf sitting atop a Symbiote-affected treasure chest with Peter Parker's alter ego reimagined as a giant arachnid crawling behind her.

Luciano Vecchio handles another iteration of Spider-Man, namely Miles Morales, whose new self-titled series launches on Aug. 12. The artist's variant cover for the debut issue sees the young man don armor that appears simultaneously primitive and futuristic and wield what can only be described as a spider-like sword made of pure energy.

The Isekai Variant Cover for the Aug. 26 release of Wolverine #26 comes from Alessandro Cappuccio. The design makes the adamantium-clawed mutant the star of video game that depicts him as a Viking who has already taken a lot of damage from enemy archers, evidenced by the arrows sticking out of his body, when he comes across a vicious dragon.

Also releasing on Aug. 26 is X-Men #36, for which Juan Frigeri draws a special variant cover. There also happens to be a couple of dragons in his design, flying in the background behind a trio of familiar mutants who appear to have entered an intriguing sci-fi/fantasy setting through a portal.

Some of Marvel's Isekai Variant Covers still have yet to be revealed. They include Netho Diaz's design for Iron Man #8, which comes out Aug. 5, Jonas Scharf's X-Men #35 variant cover due on Aug. 12, and the Sept. 2 release of Venom #261, featuring a variant design by Geoff Shaw.
