This year’s big Marvel event series will have major ramifications for the Avengers. Armageddon is shaping up to be an impactful event for the Marvel Universe, and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will be at the center of the action. Marvel claims the changes to the Avengers will be the greatest since the classic story, Avengers: Disassembled.

The Road to Armageddon is playing out in Chip Zdarsky’s Captain America and Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon. Zdarsky is also penning Armageddon, with these two series laying the groundwork for what’s to come. May’s solicitations for Captain America and Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon tease how the event will live up to the hype of Disassembled.

Armageddon takes place in the fallout of One World Under Doom, which ended with Latveria on the brink of civil war. Captain America deals with Steve Rogers heading to Latveria to stop Doom’s legacy from falling into the wrong hands. Cap will also have to contend with an all-new S.H.I.E.L.D. and Red Hulk.

As for Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon, an investigation into missing mutants leads Wolverine to uncover a new super soldier program called Primewarrior. Logan will have to team up with Dave Colton, the 9/11-inspired Captain America who debuted during Zdarsky and Valerio Schiti’s opening Captain America run, as they race to take down the latest Weapon X.

However, the greatest wildcard that will come into play in Armageddon is “origin boxes” that will make their way from the Ultimate Universe to the Marvel Prime Universe of Earth-616. These devices will give birth to new heroes (and villains) that will reshape the Marvel Universe as we know it.

CAPTAIN AMERICA! As the final puzzle piece clicks into place, the stage is set for the next AVENGERS epic, and Wolverine must make a choice that will have ramifications for the entire Marvel Universe…"

How Armageddon Can Live Up to the Hype of Avengers: Disassembled

Avengers: Disassembled is a 2004 crossover event that tore apart Earth’s Mightiest Heroes at their very core. Billed as one of the worst days in the Avengers’ history, it featured the dissolution of the core Avengers team, leading to a relaunch of the franchise and the recruitment of new members like Spider-Man and Wolverine.

With writer Jed MacKay wrapping up his run on Avengers, it opens a runway for Chip Zdarsky to potentially take the reins while Armageddon runs through the spring and summer. It's also not out of the realm of possibility to see Zdarsky become the full-time writer of Avengers going forward.

Armageddon has big shoes to fill when it comes to being compared to Avengers: Disassembled. A major restructuring of the entire Avengers concept would have to be in play. We're talking about who is on the team post-Armageddon, surprise deaths, etc. Everything should be on the table.
