More than two decades after it came out, an underrated sci-fi sequel starring Will Smith is finally getting the recognition it deserves. As it lands on a brand-new streaming home, Men in Black II is already a hit.
Just a few days after landing on Tubi, Men in Black II is already the most-watched movie on the free streaming service. According to FlixPatrol, the 2002 sequel starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones took only four days to hit the No. 1 spot on Tubi, beating out hundreds of other free movies on the platform. It takes the place of the original Men in Black, which held the top spot for the first three days of 2026.
Men in Black II premiered on July 3, 2002, five years after the original film became a surprise hit. The sequel reunites Agent J (Will Smith) with his retired mentor, Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones), as they team up yet again to face the invading threat of the alien Serleena (Lara Flynn Boyle). The film features an all-star supporting cast that includes Johnny Knoxville, Tony Shalhoub, Patrick Warburton, Rip Torn, and more.
The Men in Black franchise is based on the Marvel Comics imprint of the same name created by Lowell Cunningham. The original series ran for six issues, beginning in 1990 and concluding in 1991. Since then, it has been resurrected multiple times for brief runs that continue the adventures of its iconic agents.
Although Men in Black II was another box office hit, it wasn't received as well as its predecessor. Rotten Tomatoes gives the sequel a measly 38% approval rating, with critics taking issue with its lack of originality compared to the original, which holds an incredible 91%. Audiences aren't much fonder of Men in Black II, awarding the sequel a 45% score. Of the three original Men in Black movies, the second has the lowest overall rating and is generally considered the weak link of the trilogy.
Is the Men in Black Franchise Dead?
Image via Colombia PicturesThe Men in Black movies once formed a surprisingly strong franchise, with three back-to-back box office hits. Unfortunately, the franchise has fallen a long way since the conclusion of its original trilogy. Sony tried to revitalize the brand with a fourth film, Men in Black: International, in 2019. Unfortunately, the reset didn't go as planned and effectively killed the franchise.
Men in Black: International stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson as a new pair of agents who take over the defense of Planet Earth from malevolent alien lifeforms. The first film was meant to set up a new era of the Men in Black franchise starring Hemsworth and Thompson. While a sequel was never officially announced, Sony's intentions with International were quite transparent from the beginning.
Unfortunately for everyone involved, Men in Black: International was a flop across the board. The film was universally panned by critics, largely hated by fans for its exclusion of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, and a box office bomb. By the end of its theatrical run, it was quite clear that there would be no direct sequel to Men in Black: International. Worse, it seemed likely that the Men in Black franchise was dead for good—until recently.
The Men in Black brand has remained silent for the last few years, but a new development suggests there could be another film on the horizon. In December 2025, Deadline Hollywood reported that Chris Bremner had been tapped to write the screenplay for a fifth Men in Black film. Few details have been revealed about the sequel, but given Bremner's past working with Smith on the Bad Boys franchise, there is a strong chance that the original cast could return.
Alternatively, Men in Black 5 could combine the casts of the original trilogy and International, uniting Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Hemsworth, and Tessa Thompson in one epic crossover event. Given the poor reception to the fourth Men in Black film, however, this doesn't seem particularly likely.
Men in Black 5 does not have an official release date.
