Mighty Avengers #27-31 (2009-2010): 1st Unspoken, People’s Defense Force of China

1 week ago 9

This arc starts with a flashback that takes place when Black Bolt was still a prince, and his cousin was king of the Inhumans. Who is his cousin? Well, his name is blacked out and he is known as “The Unspoken.” Black Bolt and his friends, Medusa and the newly-terrigenesis-ed (is that a word?) Karnak and Gorgon, are angry that Unspoken has hidden the “Slave Engine,” and the young Inhumans believe it is necessary to defend themselves from humans.

They then fight and Black Bolt takes down the king, and assumes the throne. It is explained that Unspoken was a living embodiment of the terrigen mists.

Flash to today, and we see that Unspoken survived his battle with Black Bolt, was found by some Alpha Primitives.

We then move to John Walker, Quicksilver, and Ban-Luck. Their storyline has been going on for a bit. They are in China where they find the Unspoken. However, The People’s Defense Force of China, a new team, have also found him.

The Mighty Avengers watch as the Unspoken seems to slaughter all of them. (Most aren’t dead, though.). Quicksilver tries to call the team…

Back at the “PymPocket,” the Mighty Avengers’ base, Hank Pym is now combining magic with science to create a powerful base of operations. Jocosta now has the ability to generate multiple bodies. They’ve also been joined by Scarlet Witch, who takes Quicksilver’s call…

Only yeah, that’s not Wanda. It’s Loki.

The Young Avengers arrive and Wiccan casts a spell to reveal her true identity. While he is unable to at first, he does enrage “Scarlet Witch” and they all fight.

Eventually, her identity is revealed. The Mighty Avengers assemble a whole truckload of heroes and some venture to China to join the battle.

Back in China, the surviving Chinese heroes fight the Mighty Avengers briefly before they form an alliance, but the Unspoken uses his terrigen power to mutate Quicksilver, John Walker, and Ban-Luck.

The Mighty Avengers assemble a whole truckload of heroes and some venture to China to join the battle. There a bunch of decent big fights.

And while THAT is all going on, Eternity offers Hank Pym the role of “Scientist Supreme.”

Plus, Hank Pym hardly needs ANOTHER code name.

I’m really not down with that. Eternity is supposed to be a living embodiment of cosmic reality. This is all too beneath him.

Anyway, Pym accesses the Slave Engine and defeats Unspoken.

This book continues to have a vast, “X-Men-like” scale. It works fairly well, though.
