Well, this justified staying on that crowdfunding mailing list, I guess. I have been notified that a new Sherlock Holmes comic called Holmes Undead is in the works.
It’s created by “career martial artist and former professional wrestler Casus Belli”, written by Thomas Pugh, and illustrated by Virgilio Calgagno.
In Holmes Undead, the vampire Moriarty bit Holmes, and now, in the modern day, the immortal detective works with Gionne Watson, descendent of John, in a story billed as “blood-soaked… gothic horror”. The tagline is “Sherlock Holmes meets Vampire: The Masquerade!” I’m not a big fan of a supernatural Sherlock, myself, but it’s certainly a good excuse for a current-day story, and I do like the culture clash of classic Holmes in the modern day.
It can be pledged for on Zoop, but the first 22-page issue is $20 plus shipping (although the bundle also includes an MP3, digital copy, and print). That seems rather pricey. You can also buy the first issue on TikTok for just over $10 (including US shipping).
The website gallery has a series of pinups by JC Grande after famous Image Comics creators: Liefeld, Lee, Larson, and McFarlane, in case you ever wanted to see Sherlock Holmes in a scratchy style. More to the point, there are the first few pages of the issue there as well.
I’ve had the pleasure of reading a review copy, and while the first issue is setup (and anyone’s who read the promotional text will know more about the characters than the reader of the issue), I liked Gionne being a woman of color, and more that she’s pretty competent at taking care of herself. I’m hoping there’s word on another issue soon.
