Nicolas Cage Confirmed He Has Finally Dropped His ‘Coppola’ Name

Nicolas Cage has built a four decade career with more than 100 film credits, but the Oscar winner just made a personal move that signals a new chapter. In a recent interview with Variety, the actor confirmed he legally changed his name last year, making “Nicolas Cage” his official name both on and off screen.

Cage was born Nicolas Kim Coppola, part of a famous Hollywood family tied to director Francis Ford Coppola of The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. He adopted the Cage name early in his career to avoid riding on his family’s reputation. Now he says the legal change locks in his independence for good.

“I am Nick Cage. I changed my name legally last year. I’m Nick Cage in life, and I’m Nick Cage on camera,” he told the outlet. He added that he wanted to define his own legacy rather than stay linked to the Coppola name.

The actor said the last name “Cage” came from both comic books and music. He pointed to Marvel’s Luke Cage as one influence, along with experimental composer John Cage. He kept the first name “Nicolas” to honor his father, even though he noted that the French spelling often causes confusion.

Cage’s career has long been defined by bold and unconventional performances. He once described his acting style as “Nouveau Shamanic,” a method that leans into heightened emotion and theatrical choices. That approach helped shape films like Con Air, Face/Off, and The Rock, and more recent work in Mandy, Dream Scenario, and Longlegs.

His name change comes as he finds renewed success. Cage is now starring in the Prime Video series Spider-Noir, where he plays a private investigator pulled back into action as a masked hero. The show has earned strong reviews, with a 91 percent critic score and a 92 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The role marks a shift for Cage, who has focused mainly on films in recent years. It also taps into his long standing interest in comic books. He previously played Johnny Blaze in Ghost Rider and named his son Kal-El after Superman.

Reception to Spider-Noir suggests the move to television is paying off. Critics have praised the series as stylized and engaging, with Cage at the center of its success. For an actor known as much for reinvention as performance, the legal name change and a hit new series point to a clear message. Nicolas Cage is fully in control of his brand and his future.
