‘Project Hail Mary’ Chasing the All-Time Space Movie Record

1 day ago 2

Project Hail Mary is quickly becoming one of the biggest box office stories of 2026, with strong ticket sales and steady audience interest driving its rise. The sci fi film, directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller and based on the novel by Andy Weir, stars Ryan Gosling as a scientist tasked with saving Earth as the sun begins to fail.

The movie opened to more than $80 million domestically and has held its ground in the weeks since. Strong word of mouth and positive reviews have kept it near the top of daily box office charts for nearly a month. Industry analysts point to its unusual staying power, with smaller week to week drops than most major releases. In its fourth weekend, Project Hail Mary brought in another $24.5 million in the United States. That pushed its global total past $500 million. While The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has drawn family audiences, Project Hail Mary continues to lead among adult moviegoers.

The film is also expected to face new competition from Michael, a biopic directed by Antoine Fuqua, which is set to open on April 24. Even so, current trends suggest Project Hail Mary could remain a top choice for at least another week. Its performance puts it ahead of other well known space films like The Martian, Armageddon, and Gravity at the same point in their runs. However, it still trails one major benchmark in the genre.

Interstellar, directed by Christopher Nolan, earned more than $681 million during its initial release in 2014 and stayed in theaters for months. That number later grew to over $774 million after several re releases, including a 10 year anniversary run in 2024.

Project Hail Mary has already passed Interstellar in domestic earnings, with more than $256 million compared to $203.2 million. The question now is whether it can close the gap worldwide. Some analysts say the summer movie season could give it the boost it needs, though it may not match the long theater run that helped Interstellar reach its final total.

Starting this weekend, Project Hail Mary returns to IMAX theaters for one week, which is great, but the only drawback is that this will delay the movie’s arrival on Prime Video. The film’s visual effects and strong audience response suggest it could follow a similar path with future re releases. Studios have increasingly relied on repeat theatrical runs to extend the life of major films, especially those with strong fan support.

For now, Project Hail Mary stands as a rare box office success story in a market that has struggled to produce consistent hits. Its performance signals that audiences are still willing to show up for original stories, especially when they deliver both spectacle and substance.
