The following contains major spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #19, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Spider-Man just got the rematch he has been waiting for, and it was even more epic than any expected.
After months of journeying across the cosmos, the titular hero of Amazing Spider-Man #19 (by Joe Kelly, Pepe Larraz, Marte Gracia, Marcio Menyz, and VC's Joe Caramagna) finally gets his shot at a rematch with the enigmatic powerhouse known as Hellgate. And, while Peter Parker himself might not be strong enough to tackle this particular opponent, not even Hellgate can withstand an entire starship crashing down on top of him.

The official solicit synopsis for Amazing Spider-Man #19 from Marvel Comics reads, "SPIDEY VS. HELLGATE, ROUND TWO! The spacefaring SPIDER-MAN heads back to Earth — only to find HELLGATE standing in his way! Spider-Man's finally strong enough to beat the most powerful foe he's ever faced... right?!"
Spider-Man's ongoing battle against the mysterious powerhouse known as Hellgate began all the way back in Amazing Spider-Man #7 in 2025. Although Hellgate initially helped the Wall-Crawler deal with an entirely different set of foes, that didn't stop the enigmatic warrior from challenging Spider-Man once the dust had settled.
During their own initial confrontation, Hellgate quite literally punched Spider-Man across the cosmos, leaving the hero stranded on the other side of the Marvel Universe. Fortunately, Spider-Man found one old ally in the form of Rocket Raccoon shortly after, as well as several new friends, including a new romantic interest in Raelith the Wretched.
Perhaps the most surprising turn of this entire ongoing ordeal is that New York City hasn't been devoid of Spider-Man in Peter Parker's absence, nor has it been devoid of Peter Parker. With Peter's disappearance, his old ally, current adversary, and genetic clone Ben Reilly has stepped in to play the role of the man he was quite literally made from.
All the while, another impostor has stepped in to take on the mantle of Spider-Man in Peter's absence. Instead of Peter Parker, it is Norman Osborn who has been playing the role of Spider-Man in recent months, albeit not to any great success. In fact, Norman's most recent outing as Spider-Man was such a resounding failure that the former Green Goblin was forced to turn to none other than J. Jonah Jameson for help.
There is also one other person who has recently decided to take on the role of Spider-Man, someone who is far closer to Peter Parker than anyone else. As seen in the pages of Venom #252 by Al Ewing and Paco Medina, Mary Jane Watson and the Venom symbiote have taken it upon themselves to hide their own identity behind an exceptionally bulky Spider-Man disguise that fooled far more people than it rightly should have at the time.
