As the Star Trek franchise boldly enters its 60th year, fans will soon be able to celebrate with exciting new comic stories. Star Trek is officially confirmed to be partnering with Webtoon to deliver 'original stories' set in-universe.
Announced as part of the most recent Star Trek Day, celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the franchise are set to officially begin in January 2026, though the Webtoon partnership does not have a confirmed release date at this time. "Star Trek will enter the digital comic space with WEBTOON in 2026, engaging their audience of approximately 155 million monthly active users across 150+ countries, connecting with new audiences by launching original stories that touch on universal genres and themes based in the world of Star Trek," the official press release reads.
Webtoon is a South Korean-American webtoon platform originally launched in 2004, which has quickly become one of the world's largest retailers for digital webtoons and compact comics designed to be read on smartphones. Their current library of content includes collaborations with other big franchises, including Disney, Marvel, Star Wars and 20th Century Fox.
As for Star Trek, the long-running media franchise has been a consistent force to be reckoned with in the world of comics for decades. Over the years, numerous publishers have consistently released comics set in Star Trek's universe, including DC, Marvel and, most recently, IDW Publishing. After obtaining the publishing rights in 2006, IDW has now been publishing Star Trek comics for twenty years, including countless miniseries and even ongoing titles.
It remains to be seen exactly where Star Trek's Webtoon collaboration will go with its stories and adventures, but IDW's recently released titles are likely to be a good indication of where things are headed. Some of these include Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - The Scorpius Run, which chronicles never-before-seen adventures from the hit Paramount+ show. Titles like Picard's Academy explore other areas of the Star Trek universe, showing Jean-Luc when he was just an ordinary student at the Academy.
Star Trek Prepares Massive Fan-Focused Celebrations for 2026's 60th Anniversary
Paramount+The Star Trek and Webtoon collaboration isn't the only exciting news planned for 2026. As the legendary franchise prepares to celebrate its 60th anniversary on the upcoming Star Trek Day (Sept. 8, 2026), the entire year is shaping up to be full of new content and surprises. This includes more Star Trek coming to Paramount+, with Starfleet Academy set to launch early this year.
Starfleet Academy will introduce audiences to a new group of cadets, with Holly Hunter starring as the Chancellor of the Starfleet Academy and Captain of the U.S.S. Athena. Paul Giamatti and Tatiana Maslany will also star in recurring roles. Other exciting Star Trek plans for 2026 include a Lego collaboration and even a special Star Trek: The Cruise, which sets sail in February and will include actors William Shatner and Walter Koenig as well as more than 20 actors from across the franchise.
Star Trek's Webtoon collaboration will launch later this year, but an exact release date has not been announced at this time.
