Star Trek's lore is about to get a lot more exciting, with none other than Captain Kirk set to face off against the Borg for the first time in the franchise's canon. A new issue of IDW's Star Trek: The Last Starship teases the fateful encounter.

Releasing on June 17, 2026, Star Trek: The Last Starship #8 will give fans the never-before-seen battle, with Kirk hunting down Borg Queen Agnes Jurati after following her aboard the newly revealed Deep Space Hope — the franchise's answer to the beloved Deep Space Nine. IDW's solicit for the upcoming issue teases the showdown, saying: "The standoff that follows is one for the ages — resistance is futile, after all… unless you’re Captain James T. Kirk."

Captain Kirk Fights the Borg in New Star Trek Story

The Last Starship series takes place after the Burn, a cataclysmic galaxy-wide event that saw most of the world's Dilithium supplies mysteriously become inert — leading to unparalleled chaos as every technology that harnessed the element for its energy flux regulation detonated. After the Burn, the Borg resurrected Kirk, but their exact intentions remain to be seen.

The seventh issue of the series, which releases on May 20, sees the crew of the U.S.S. Omega finding a glimmer of hope in an increasingly dark galaxy as they stumble upon the research station known as Deep Space Hope. When the story picks back up in June, Borg Queen Agnes Jurati will leave the crew behind in an attempt to assimilate the ship's power.

The only problem for Jurati will be that Kirk follows her on board, determined to figure out why she and the Borg brought him back to life. With the new issue, fans may finally get the answers they've been waiting for: do the Borg really want Kirk to be the galaxy's savior... or are they planning to turn him into its demise?

IDW's cover art for The Last Starship #8 certainly teases that the confrontation between Kirk and the Borg Queen will be intense. The main cover features the Queen looking directly ahead, with screaming faces surrounding her. Another, more frightening cover by Suspiria Vilchez, shows Kirk and the Borg Queen locked together in what appears to be a life-draining kiss.

As The Last Starship's story plunges even deeper into the aftermath of the Burn, it gives fans a deeper glimpse of the alien antagonists known as the Borg from Star Trek lore. A group of cyborgs linked to a hive mind known as 'The Collective', they are led by the Borg Queen, who coordinates their tasks and leads the charge.

As for Agnes Jurati, fans of Star Trek: Picard will recognize the character, portrayed by Alison Pill. A brilliant but naive cyberneticist, Jurati was once a key ally to Picard before being assimilated by the Borg Queen throughout the series. Together, Jurati and the Borg Queen created a new Borg Collective, agreeing not to forcefully take new members and also embracing their individuality.

Star Trek: The Last Starship #8 goes on sale June 17 from IDW Publishing.
