Supernatural may have ended its stint on television, yet that doesn't mean that fans need to bid farewell to their favorite characters anytime soon.
As Supernatural has revived itself in the form of comic books, the ongoing return to the deeply beloved horror-inspired, uniquely Biblical series has welcomed back familiar faces who have met unfortunate ends. While it's expected that Sam and Dean Winchester will continue to spearhead the series as a whole, other characters have been welcomed back to face new horrors through an alternative means of entertainment media. Bleeding Cool has reported that Misha Collins' Castiel will be earning his own comics from Dynamite in June 2026.
The solicit for Supernatural Special Castiel #1 (One Shot) reads: "Fan-favorite Supernatural character, Castiel, makes his comics debut! Castiel has always been sure. Of his faith. Of his duty. Of his position. Always. So why is he suddenly having doubts? The only thing he knows is that it has something to do with the Winchesters. He's followed them to Gainesville, FL, on a chaotic weekend when music and sports fans have descended on the city. And wherever Castiel goes, the Winchesters are one step ahead of him, hunting for the monsters that have been reported in the vicinity. Whether it's at a concert, a frat party, or wherever – by the time Castiel follows the trail there, the Winchesters have come and gone. Until they find the thing they're all looking for…together. But will Castiel help the brothers in their mission, or just get in the way?"
Supernatural Special Castiel #1 One Shot is written by Preeti Chhibber, featuring artwork by Pasquale Qualano. Dynamite is no stranger to revisiting the Supernatural universe, as the comic book publisher loosely relaunched the long-running television show for print years after the series finale left fans shocked, stunned, and somewhat confused. Despite the conflicting ending that Castiel was given during Supernatural's swan song, the goodhearted angel will return on June 3, 2026.
What Happened To Castiel In Supernatural?
Image via The CWCastiel's return may be greatly anticipated by those who weren't exactly ready to let him go to begin with. At the very tail end of Supernatural, Castiel sacrifices himself for Dean and falls into the endlessness of the Empty. Before he meets his demise, Castiel confesses his love for Dean, which was a long-awaited climax for the character's arc that was deemed overdue by those who believed the angel to be queer before his proper coming out.
How Supernatural decided to conclude Castiel's story was highly controversial; not because the angel was confirmed to be a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, but because of how closely his decision to offer up his life aligned with the cursed "bury your gays" trope. The fact that Castiel is plunged into Hell momentarily after his confession leaves an unsavory taste behind, especially for those who may resonate with Castiel or identify as LGBTQIA+.
Castiel's narrative path was genuinely interesting, and it's still endlessly frustrating that the screenwriting team could not have granted him a sense of true peace as the television series raced to meet its very end. There's still an ounce of hope, though, that Supernatural Special Castiel #1 One Shot can redeem such a precious character years on.
