IDW Publishing is about to usher in the very first all-out horror story of Godzilla's Kai-Sei era.
Per Bloody Disgusting, IDW Publishing has officially unveiled their next entry in the King of the Monster's Kai-Sei era — The Horror of Godzilla. This new title, written by Ethan S. Parker and Griffin Sheridan and illustrated by Tristan Jones, will take readers back to 1954 to witness the titular kaiju's very first attack on Japan in utterly devastating fashion.
IDW Publishing editor Jake Williams said of The Horror of Godzilla, "[This] is for fans of Godzilla Minus One, Shin Godzilla, and Godzilla '54. It's a terrifying look at the Kai-Sei era's first Godzilla attack. It grabs the reader and places them on the ground in the middle of the most petrifying night in human history: the arrival of Godzilla."

What's Been Said About The Horror Of Godzilla?

Artist Tristan Jones, who is currently riding a wave of success following IDW Publishing's hit Event Horizon: Dark Descent prequel series, also opened up about The Horror of Godzilla. "As a storyteller that’s become something of a fixture in the horror genre, it's a genuine honor and a thrill to work with Griffin and Ethan (and our incredible editor Jake) on a Godzilla story that leans so hard into my favorite visuals and even harder into things I always wished the films would."
"It's a huge departure from what I’ve been known for so far, and everyone's given me incredible space to both try new things and bring visuals to comics I’d never had a proper chance to before," Jones added.
The Kai-Sei era of Godzilla stories began last year with the release of a trio of vastly different titles from IDW Publishing. Among these are Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone, which gives readers a fantastical apocalyptic wasteland to explore, Starship Godzilla, which turns the titular kaiju into a whole new kind of powerhouse, and the mainline Godzilla series by writer Tim Seeley and artist Nikola Čižmešija.
Back in 2025, IDW Publishing editor Jake Williams spoke to CBR's John Dodge about the advent of the Kai-Sei era, noting that a core piece of inspiration for the entire endeavor was "the medium of comic books itself." Williams explained at the time, "Looking at the medium, meditating on what we can do with it, and trying our best to create a universe for Godzilla that utilizes everything the comic book medium has to offer."
The Horror of Godzilla #1 from IDW Publishing goes on sale starting on July 29.
