Black Mirror is about to take the comic book world by storm. Two upcoming fan-funded projects are now set to reinterpret the events of two of the most popular episodes from Netflix's acclaimed horror anthology series.

Comic book creator Neil Gibson of Twisted Comics is officially set to release two Black Mirror-inspired graphic novels based on popular episodes of the series. These graphic novels both began as Kickstarter campaigns, where fans of Netflix's series quickly showed their support, fully funding the projects and then some. Now, both projects are completed, each offering a unique perspective on a separate iconic Black Mirror episode.

The first of these projects is Black Mirror: USS Callister, a graphic novel depicting the events of the Season 4 episode of the same name. The original episode takes the form of a Star Trek ripoff that all takes place within a multiplayer virtual reality video game. The fan-favorite Black Mirror story stars Jesse Plemons in the lead role, with supporting performances from Cristin Milioti, Michaela Coel, and Jimmi Simpson. To date, "USS Callister" is the only Black Mirror episode to get a sequel, "USS Callister: Into Infinity," which aired as part of the show's seventh season in 2025.

Now, Black Mirror: USS Callister retells the events of the original Black Mirror episode. Neil Gibson pens the new graphic novel, which also features stunning art by Silvano Beltramo, who combines two separate art styles, using Jack Kirby-esque whimsy for the scenes within the virtual reality game and a more realistic, modern style for the real world. The book also features the talents of colorist Agnese Pozza and letterer Rob Jones. Artist Billy Butcher also contributed a unique cover design for the fan-funded project. Copies of Black Mirror: USS Callister can be purchased at Twisted Comics' Kickstarter page, along with additional packages that feature bonus content.

The second of Twisted Comics' Black Mirror graphic novels expands on another popular episode of the Netflix series. San Junipero, based on the Season 3 episode of the same name. Gibson notes on the Kickstarter page that this episode is far more optimistic than other installments of Black Mirror, which is what earned him his attention for a graphic novel adaptation. San Junipero is fully funded and in the late stages of development, but is still awaiting an official release date.

Will There Be More Black Mirror Adaptations?

Black Mirror is a unique franchise in that every episode features a completely different story, each of which could be expanded into a much larger narrative. Fan-made productions like the USS Callister and San Junipero graphic novels prove that there is an appetite for retellings of the show's most popular episodes. As of this writing, it is unclear if there are plans to adapt additional episodes in graphic novel format. However, given the massive success in getting the first two funded, it wouldn't be a surprise if Twisted Comics continued to delve into the world of Black Mirror.

There is an endless supply of Black Mirror episodes that would lend themselves well to a comic book-style adaptation. After adapting "USS Callister," Twisted Comics may be interested in doing the same for the Season 7 sequel episode, "USS Callister: Into Infinity." Likewise, Aaron Paul's Season 6 episode, "Beyond the Sea," is incredibly popular and features stunning visuals that would translate brilliantly into a comic book medium. However, Twisted Comics has yet to announce anything of the kind, and most likely won't until development on San Junipero is fully completed.

With an eighth season of Black Mirror recently announced by Netflix, there is no shortage of episodes that could feasibly be adapted into a new format. In the meantime, fans of this new take on the Black Mirror universe can also check out Twisted Comics' original works on their website. Included in their library is Twisted Dark, an ongoing series that features a similar premise to Black Mirror, and other original works.

Black Mirror is available to stream on Netflix. Twisted Comics' Black Mirror: USS Callister is now available to read.
