As Jonathan Hickman's Ultimate Spider-Man meets its ultimate ending, Marvel fans have taken to the internet to share their parting thoughts as the series reaches its conclusion.
Across the web, official reviews of Ultimate Spider-Man #24 and fan reactions have explored the duality of comics readers' relationship with the title. "Ultimate Spider-Man #24 wraps up major threads with confidence, paying off yearlong rivalries while leaving just enough open space for readers to imagine what comes next," AIPT Comics' David Brooke writes in his review of the finale, "Hickman delivers decisive endings for Kingpin and Mr. Negative, gives Peter a hard-earned win, and reinforces the emotional core of the series through MJ. The problem is not execution but impact. With so many victories and so little true loss, the finale feels satisfying yet slightly soft. Checchetto’s dynamic art carries the action, even as Dave Messina’s contributions create occasional visual whiplash. It is a polished and crowd-pleasing conclusion, though one that opts for reassurance over devastation."
Bleeding Cool's Rich Johnson said that "Another Spider-Man writer told me that previously, when new Spider-Men were introduced, they all had to have personal tragedies that led to their Spider-status, everyone had to have an Uncle Ben in one form or another to inspire their decisions and their actions. But the Spider-Verse movies saw Spider-Men with different backgrounds, not all with such tragedies, which seeped back into the comic books, and so the rule was lifted. And maybe Ultimate Spider-Man is an example of that evolution..." dubbing the finale issue as "an extra-long finale by Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto."
Kevin Lainez of Comic Book Revolution is much more complimentary of Ultimate Spider-Man #24 in his review. "Ultimate Spider-Man #24 does a fantastic job providing a satisfying conclusion to this series. Peter Parker steps up to show that no matter when he gets his powers, he will always step up as Spider-Man. The ending for every character arc felt right for where everyone was going. Ending the series by emphasizing the strength of the series, the Parker Family bond, was the cherry on top to leave you with a smile on your face," he confirmed.
The Internet Is Conflicted On How To Feel About Ultimate Spider-Man #24
Image via Marvel ComicsWhen looking at the Ultimate Spider-Man #24 reviews for a consensus on where Spider-Man fans have settled on the ending, the internet won't present a clear or consistent answer. Just as any form of art is subjective, the opinions relating to Hickman's cumulative issue lean into the idea that it's extremely rare that any piece of media will satisfy an entire fan base. "I read Ultimate Spider-Man #24. The final issue of this unconventional Spider-Man series, which began in the mid-30s as a father of two children, closes with the death of his archenemy, the Kingpin." @BoyWithTheThorn wrote on X, offering up a more in-depth personal analysis of the finale. "It was a story that started with the feeling that something is missing, but the conclusion is the realization that the truly important things were all there from the very beginning. In a way, it was a grand-scale midlife crisis."
Not all X users agree with such a bittersweet approach to the finale. "Ultimate Spider-Man #24... F--k Marvel. That's all there is to say. If the end of the universe isn't just another gimmick to sell more #1 then they are officially the dumbest publisher on the planet. This issue couldn't be less of a definitive ending even if it tried," user @pheelitz argued in their own take on the conclusive issue, lashing out at Marvel Comics as a whole in response to Ultimate Spider-Man's ending.
X account @King0m_Mel0dy nearly captures the netizen-created division over Ultimate Spider-Man #24. "The finale issue of UsM, the book that reignited my love for Spider-Man," the post began, "Was it the perfect ending... no. But it was a good ending. The most definitive ending out of the Ultimate books so far, as well. It had some really nice moments between Peter and MJ."
