Uncanny X-Men First Class #1-8 (2009)

The “First Class” brand has suffered lately, with Wolverine First Class having a really hard time figuring out if it’s an all-ages book or just one that fills gaps for people who just can’t get enough Wolverine from the other dozen-or-so books he appears in every month.

Here, Marvel tries the “early days” theme with the rebooted X-Men lineup from the classic Chris Claremont days.

The writing style of the main story, by Scott Gray, is pretty similar to Claremont. It’s wordy and full of exposition. The art also appears imitative–of the great Dave Cockrum.

In these issues, the X-Men fight Deathbird and spend time with the Inhumans. Nightcrawler is particularly affected, wondering what it would be like to live in Attilan–where so many people don’t look like “normal” humans. There’s also some space stuff…And it’s one continuous story, with each issue being also somewhat self-contained.

I really don’t have much to say here. The book is fine and reads well, even if Claremont’s style is now outdated. And it only lasts eight issues.
