Some of Rhodey’s former West Coast Avengers teammates come after him for the various questionable activities he’s been involved in for the past seven issues.
There’s some fun fights that follow, notably when War Machine uses his new “magno lock” tech to pull their aircraft into pieces, leaving them all to fall to their deaths unless Wonder Man stops his attack and rescues them. After their skirmish is done, Rhodey and Suzi Endo tell the heroes about how Ultimo has been separated into three parts by a conglomerate of scientists and government operatives. War Machine has destroyed or assimilated two of the three—what’s left is the brain that infects humans.
They all team up and take down a newly assembled Ultimo—but as the pieces of him fall to the ground, they begin taking over plantlife.
Norman Osborn attacks Rhodey under the guise that Rhodey is, in fact, Ultimo (which isn’t entirely UNTRUE since Rhodes has assimilated Ultimo tech). Osborn and Rhodes team-up to defeat Ultimo. He is turned into a liquid, infantile robot and left with Suzi Endo, who will raise him.
But when that’s all done, Osborn shoots Rhodey in the back. A big War Machine vs Iron Patriot fight follows, which Rhodey loses.
While it’s happening, Rhodes’ allies get information about corrupt law enforcement and a major insurance company, all associated with Osborn
The President is among those who react positively to the negative stories about old Norm.
To redeem himself, Osborn decides to put Rhodes on public trial for war crimes.
