X-Men: Divided We Stand #2 (2008)

The two one-shots supporting the “Divided We Stand” phase of the X-verse were very good but those covers…Ugh.

I like the concept between this 2-issue miniseries, which is to offer a vehicle for short, personal stories during a big “event” (or more like a “phase”) running in all of the X-books.  I know Civil War and now Secret Invasion had a bunch of spin-off series, but these two issues are literally just a bunch of 5-10 page short stories that lend themselves particularly well to the one-shot format.

Here we go.  This issue starts with a Beast feature by Mike Carey and Scot Eaton.  He goes to the wreckage of the X-Mansion to dispose of research, personnel files and other information about things like the Legacy Virus and Sentinel programming (question: why didn’t SHIELD swoop in and snatch this up??).

He then takes custody of Martha “No Girl” Johansson’s living brain.

Next, Magik gets a very brief check-in.  Not much point to this except to let us know that she’s still around and still wants to get her soul back.

The third story, about Havok, has art by Frazer Irving.  I dig him.

He’s stuck in a Shi’Ar prison and forced to hear Polaris being tortured every day.  Like the Magik story before it, this is more of a character check-in than anything else.  But since these characters are not featured in any of the main X-books right now, it’s good to be reminded of what they’re up to.

Forge is next.  In the pages of Cable, we saw that Bishop knocked Forge out, stole tech, and then jumped through time to pursue Cable and Hope.  This story shows us that Bishop seriously injured Forge and, while healing, he’s recalibrated his home defenses.  Finally, Dani Moonstar offers some mentorship to Noriko “Surge” Ashida, who is distraught about the mutant disbanding.
