Growing up in rural Iowa as a reluctant reader, it all changed when he started reading the original Fantastic Four by Lee/Kirby. Now Austin can't stop reading. He has written about comics for Comic Book Yeti and he has also written tons of indie comics, best known for Big Guns Stupid Rednecks.
Cyclops' redesign is about to shock Marvel fans with the most horrific apparel he has worn since joining the X-Men. In X-Men #29, written by Jed MacKay with art by Netho Díaz, Sean Pearsons, and Arthur Hesli, Scott Summers is at his edgiest.
Summers is shown as a part-demonic cyborg with a long metallic tongue in the style of Venom, and a giant glowing red eye. While Cyclops has cycled through his own fair share of costume changes and character design revamps, X-Men #29's take on the mutant might be the most brutal one yet.
Beast wakes up to find Summers infected by a virus. Beast finally realizes Scott no longer recognizes him or anyone else and will attack anything he deems a threat. Instead of trying to defeat his friend with force, Beast attempts to talk sense into Scott. Beast aims to calm Scott down and assure him that he means no harm.
Cyclop's New Costume is Part Cyborg, Part Monster, and 100% Horrific
Image via Marvel ComicsCyclops' new costume leans heavily on body horror and is a fantastic new design for artists to play with. The unhinged cyborg covered in metal and machinery will give fans an exciting new version of the character. While Cyclops is normally portrayed as the level-headed leader of the X-Men, this design is a complete 180-degree turn for the character. Wolverine often refers to Summers as a "Boy Scout," but this version of the character is far from it. Being confused and unable to control himself, Summers could harm or kill not only his friends, but also innocent bystanders. A character nicknamed Cyclops actually becoming a literal cyclops decades after his comic book debut is incredibly ironic. The giant eye makes the character look less human, and pairing it with his new cybernetics leaves him unrecognizable in the best way possible.
Cyclops is not the only mutant to be infected by the virus. Both Magik and Juggernaut also get infected by the disease. Even though Juggernaut possesses the powers of the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak and Magik has extremely powerful magic, they still both fall victim to this strange new virus. This shows us just how powerful the new disease is. It is unknown if this will spread further into the Marvel Universe, but it potentially means loads of new costume variations and terrifying monstrosities.
While this issue all takes place aboard a spaceship, at some point, it will have to land either on Earth or maybe another alien planet. Will Beast be able to reason with his friends? Will Cyclops continue to attack him? Is this virus the same as the techno-organic virus Cable battles? This new virus could lead to the next line-wide crossover. For now, fans will only be able to speculate on what this virus means for the future of these characters. The only thing that's for sure is that this new variation of Cyclops is both terrifying and dynamic. The redesign leaves readers eager to see more of this horrifying version of Cyclops.
