Young X-Men #1 (2008): Final Genesis

1 day ago 1

Cyclops assembles a new team consisting of Blindfold (who has a vision of a future battle against Donald Pierce where an X-Man dies), Wolf Cub (who is all angry and wolfy), Dust (who is back home in Afghanistan fighting the Taliban), and Rockslide.

There’s also a new character named Eric Gitter (who has tattoos that give him powers).

He resists arrest.

Cyclops recruits Gitter out of jail.

After they’re all together, he tells them they’re fighting a new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants consisting of many of the original New Mutants.

There’s nothing wrong with this per se but it’s inconsistent with the whole concept behind “Divided We Stand,” which is that Cyclops decided Xavier’s dream was dead and disassembled the X-Men.  Now, he’s creating a new team and the very title of the story recalls Giant-Size X-Men #1, which began the most successful team reboot of all time.

Plus, the characters are all familiar except for Gitter.  The story is familiar–going against former teammates who have joined the Hellfire Club.  The forewarned murder by Donald Pierce has happened before.  It feels tired.
