INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT
Michael, I relate to David not just as an underdog, but there was so much more to his story that I never realized. I should have paid more attention during church. I didn’t know he lost his mother at a young age. I lost mine about eight years ago. Seeing the impact that had on your character throughout the series was enlightening.
Michael Iskander: I’m sorry to hear that you went through that, and I’m glad you could find something in David that resonates with you. Thank you for sharing that.
And Martyn, in researching your work, I realized this is technically the second time you’ve played Goliath.
Martyn Ford: Yes, the first attempt to play Goliath was nine years ago in a project that unfortunately fell apart. When I got the call for ‘House of David‘ after wrapping up Mortal Kombat 2 in Australia, it felt like redemption. This time, I could bring a depth to Goliath I couldn’t have offered a decade ago.
This story, known around the world, is the ultimate tale of the underdog. How did you both approach handling such a mythological story set in a distant time?
Michael Iskander: For me, the story of David is led by God. I went to scripture, reading First and Second Samuel and all the Psalms to find the heart of David. His diaries reveal a man of deep emotions, often in pain or mourning, which I think we can all relate to.
Martyn Ford: Portraying Goliath, now with more life experience and acting knowledge, was surreal. You build a new family on set, immerse yourself in the role, and only afterward do you realize the enormity of what you’ve done.
