Jar Jar Binks has gone from Star Wars pariah to beloved character in recent years, and that love continues with a new Marvel Comics One-Shot. Co-Written by Ahmed Best, the actor behind Jar Jar, and Marc Guggenheim, with art by Kieran McKeown and Laura Braga, the comic takes fans back to an unknown part of Jar Jar's history.
While talking to CBR's Sean O'Connell and Jamie Parker on the Heroes Journey podcast, Best discussed what the book meant to him and some of his inspirations for the story. One scene in particular was inspired by a deleted scene from Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. When Best spoke about this moment, he said:
"We never explored that interim time between Clones and Sith, right? Where Jar Jar kind of just fades into the background. In Revenge of the Sith, I had two scenes, (but) one of them got cut. And it was a scene with Jar Jar and Palpatine. We were talking as we were walking down in the space port, right, as we were walking away from the ship. And it's a really good conversation between Jar Jar and Palpatine. That scene got cut from Sith. I always liked that scene. I always knew that there was more to Jar Jar the politician than we got to see. I wanted to explore that interim period between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. … That was kind of the goal. I wanted to bring that scene off the cutting room floor."
Star Wars: Jar Jar #1 Adds New Depth to Jar Jar's Story
Image via Marvel ComicsThe scene that Best is talking about is part of a larger story showing that there is far more to Jar Jar than the movies or even the Clone Wars TV show explored. Best and Guggenheim created a new narrative for Jar Jar, one where he was far more competent and compelling than fans are used to seeing. The one-shot gives Jar Jar a chance to find true redemption and allows him to acknowledge his role in Palpatine's rise, and grow beyond it.
Star Wars: Jar Jar #1 features Kelleran Beq and Jar Jar teaming up on the start of a new mission and a new chapter in the Prequel's character history. The comic can have far-reaching implications for many facets of the Star Wars universe. With the amount of care and attention to detail that was put into the book by Best and the team, it's wonderful to see Jar Jar treated with so much sincerity.
