 The Next Level

Sony is preparing to close out its rebooted Jumanji franchise with a third film set for release this December, bringing back its core cast for what the studio calls a final chapter. Of course, if you count the original Robin Williams film from 1995, and the Zathura: A Space Adventure (2005) spinoff by Jon Favreau, this is the 5th film in the franchise. The new movie, titled Jumanji: Open World, will once again star Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan as the video game adventure expands into the real world.

According to early details, the story shifts away from the contained jungle setting seen in prior entries and instead drops the chaos into cities and suburbs. The plot centers on the collapse of the boundary between the game and reality, forcing both the teenage players and their in-game avatars to confront threats side by side. That includes large animals and creatures now loose in populated areas, raising the stakes beyond anything shown in earlier films.

The returning cast will reprise their roles as Dr. Xander “Smolder” Bravestone, Franklin “Mouse” Finbar, Professor Sheldon “Shelly” Oberon, and Ruby Roundhouse. The dynamic between the real-world teens and their digital counterparts has been a defining feature of the reboot series, and this installment appears to push that concept further as both identities intersect in the same space.

Sony has not yet released the first trailer to the public, though footage was shown privately at CinemaCon in April. In the meantime, the studio unveiled the official logo during an investor presentation. The design keeps the franchise’s established look, with a stone-textured title set against a green backdrop and a metallic gradient finish. The subtitle “Open World” signals a clear shift in scale, aligning with the film’s premise of a game no longer confined to a screen.

The rebooted franchise began with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in 2017, which brought in $962.5 million worldwide and revived a dormant property tied to the 1995 original starring Robin Williams. That success carried into Jumanji: The Next Level in 2019, which earned $801.69 million globally. Together, the two films established a reliable box office performer for Sony, even as Hollywood struggled to maintain consistent theatrical hits in recent years.

The long gap between the second and third films reflects broader industry disruptions. Production delays tied to the COVID-19 pandemic, along with scheduling conflicts among the high-profile cast, pushed development back by several years. The result was a seven-year break between installments, a risky move in a market where audience attention can shift quickly.

Jumanji: Open World is scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 25, 2026, a prime holiday release window that has historically boosted family-friendly and action-driven films. Director Jake Kasdan returns to helm the project, working from a script co-written with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, who also worked on the previous entries.

The film arrives at a time when studios are leaning heavily on known franchises to stabilize box office returns. Whether this final installment can match or exceed its predecessors may signal how much staying power legacy reboots still hold in a changing entertainment landscape.
