Marvel Confirms The Most Unthinkable Trauma For Wolverine

Patrik Walker is an Emmy Award–winning writer who covers all things Comics & Superheroes. His work can also be found at the Dallas Cowboys, The Sporting News, and CBS Sports, among other outlets. One of the most respected names in his field, he is also a diehard enthusiast of all things comics, anime, gaming and movies — thriving in spaces where discussions involving those or similar topics reign supreme.

Wolverine has been through a lot, and he's about to go through more. This time, however, it's the unthinkable. Marvel fans know Logan all too well as one of the franchise players in the X-Men, and Marvel Comics as a whole, thanks to his brash and unfiltered savagery that is only humanized, at times, by love (such as for Jean Grey and Mariko).

But he's also known for being mostly unbeatable. His regenerative powers combine with his Adamantium-coated skeleton, retractable claws and willingness to die in every battle to make Wolverine one of the most formidable opponents in the universe. Wolverine is the consummate tough guy, after all, and he's eternally allergic to backing down from a fight.

But what would happen if his unbreakable Adamantium ... broke?

That's exactly what happened in Wolverine #19 in early 2026 and, needless to say, seeing his indestructible claws shatter in front of his very eyes makes Logan question everything about himself — as designed by Marvel Comics writer Saladin Ahmed.

Ahmed recently addressed his and Marvel's decision to break the unbreakable in Wolverine #19.

“Well, it obviously affects things like the action in the book,” Ahmed told Popverse. “But on a deeper level, this was another instance of messing with a tough guy’s emotions. The loss of the claws is a physical problem for Logan as a warrior, but the deeper damage comes when he has to face what the loss means to him. Is adamantium, which was forced on him so traumatically, really a part of him? Getting to write that sort of internal wrangling mapped into crazy Marvel moments is why I love this job!”

It's definitely a bold decision that will need to play itself out in the panels, and it's not as if it's the only time Marvel Comics has decided to drag Wolverine through the gates of Hell (see 2017's Logan), and especially over his precious Adamantium.

X-Men '97 Adapted Wolverine's Other Unthinkable Trauma

Arguably, the most notorious and iconic instance of it was recently brought to life from comics to the critically-acclaimed X-Men '97 series for Disney+ — when Magneto stripped the Adamantium from Wolverine's bones right through his skin.

While it appears he's regained it in Season 2 of X-Men '97 (July 1), his path back to it in Marvel Comics was a much longer and more arduous one, and it involved a lengthy period of time in which Wolverine had to come to terms with the fact his claws (which are actually his bones, for those who may be unaware) would not be protected by supposed invincibility.

The arc led to the famous bone-claw version of Wolverine, who had to account for the excruciating pain whenever one would snap off, or when he'd choose to snap one or more off and into an opponent's guts. This is the level of adaptation he finds himself up against following Wolverine #19, but adapting to trauma is something Logan does almost better than anyone, now, isn't it?

Season 2 of X-Men '97 will debut on Disney+ on July 1, 2026.
