‘Supernatural’ Star Misha Collins Sparks Backlash on Trans Issues

16 hours ago 5

Actor Misha Collins, known for his role as Castiel on Supernatural, is stepping into the political arena with a critique of conservatives over transgender issues, adding to a growing trend of Hollywood figures weighing in on national policy debates. Collins, who appeared in 148 episodes of Supernatural from 2008 to 2020, posted a YouTube video during Pride Month saying he feels “ashamed” of the United States and claiming transgender Americans are losing rights. He also questioned why Republicans have not embraced transgender activism as part of their platform.

In the video, Collins argued that conservative principles around limited government should naturally extend to gender identity. He pointed to long-standing Republican messaging about personal freedom and suggested the party is being inconsistent by resisting transgender policy changes.

“It actually occurs to me,” Collins said, as he described conversations about persuading moderate Republicans. He framed transgender rights as a logical extension of the idea that government should stay out of people’s personal lives.

That argument, however, skips over the core of the current debate. Many conservatives have made clear they are not focused on restricting private choices, but on limiting government mandates tied to those choices. These include taxpayer funding for medical procedures, compelled speech around pronouns, and policies that allow biological males into women’s private spaces such as bathrooms, prisons, and sports.

Collins also criticized federal policies related to military service and passport documentation, claiming they make life harder for transgender individuals. He further linked political rhetoric to an increase in hate incidents, though such claims remain heavily disputed depending on the data source and interpretation.

At the state level, Collins pointed to Kansas, where laws have tightened how gender is recorded on official documents. Supporters of these laws argue they protect legal clarity and public safety. Critics, including Collins, say they create obstacles for transgender residents.

The actor described these developments as part of a broader national pattern. He also used his platform to host activist Erin Reed and Montana State Representative Zooey Zephyr, both prominent voices in the transgender movement.

For many Americans, Collins’ comments land as another example of celebrity activism that feels disconnected from everyday concerns. Voters continue to rank issues like inflation, crime, and border security far above culture war debates, even as high-profile actors use their platforms to push political messaging.

The result is a familiar cycle. A celebrity speaks out, frames the issue in simple terms, and sparks a response from a public that is increasingly skeptical of Hollywood lectures on complex policy questions. Collins may see his comments as common sense, but for many conservatives, the issue is far more complicated than a slogan about freedom.
