Actor Idris Elba Urges Amazon MGM to Keep James Bond “Not Woke”

Screen Actors Guild Award winner Idris Elba is weighing in on the future of James Bond, and he is pushing back on calls to change the character’s identity. Elba, who was once rumored to replace Daniel Craig as the next 007, told GQ that the long-running spy franchise should stay true to its roots and avoid modern political trends.

“Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke,” Elba said.

He stressed that the character works because it offers escape, not social commentary. “I think you’ve got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don’t try and answer the world’s taste. Just be Bond,” he said.

Elba also addressed years of speculation that he would take over the role after Craig exited the franchise. He said the idea was never realistic, even as it gained traction with fans and media.

“I’ve always felt that it’s not a realistic thing. James Bond was written how he was written for a reason. But I was complimented by it,” Elba told GQ.

He pointed to global audience expectations as a factor, noting that the franchise has broad international appeal that studios cannot ignore.

“And also, I think, in realistic terms, some markets just don’t go for that. Bond is big all over the world. And audiences won’t all go for a black male, an African male, playing Bond. That’s not what they like in their culture. Period,” he said.

Amazon MGM Studios now controls the James Bond franchise and has confirmed that a search for the next actor is underway. The studio has not announced any finalists.

Elba has spoken before about the backlash tied to his name being linked to the role. In 2023, he said the reaction turned negative and focused too much on race.

He called the situation “disgusting and off-putting” and said it “became about race and nonsense.” He added that he “got the brunt of it.”

The criticism grew intense enough that Elba publicly stepped away from any interest in playing Bond.

He has also pushed back on how race is discussed in Hollywood. Earlier this year, he said he no longer labels himself a “black actor,” arguing that the term limits opportunity.

“I stopped describing myself as a Black actor when I realized it put me in a box,” Elba said.

He added that while racism is real, constant focus on race can hold people back. “As humans, we are obsessed with race. And that obsession can really hinder people’s aspirations, hinder people’s growth. Racism should be a topic for discussion, sure. Racism is very real,” he said.

“But from my perspective, it’s only as powerful as you allow it to be. We’ve got to grow. We’ve got to. Our skin is no more than that. It’s just skin.”

For longtime fans of James Bond, Elba’s comments will likely ring true. The character has always been a certain kind of fantasy, a steady figure in a changing world, and that consistency is part of the appeal. Trying to reshape Bond to fit every cultural moment risks losing what made the franchise endure in the first place. Elba’s stance reflects a respect for that legacy, and for many viewers, that may be exactly what the series needs as it moves forward.
