Growing up in rural Iowa as a reluctant reader, it all changed when he started reading the original Fantastic Four by Lee/Kirby. Now Austin can't stop reading. He has written about comics for Comic Book Yeti and he has also written tons of indie comics, best known for Big Guns Stupid Rednecks.
Archie Andrews has been around since 1941, and the redheaded comic book character is returning in a much more mature story.
This November, Archie in Hell is on the way from Oni Press. From the creative team of writer Patrick Horvath and artist Tyler Crook, this horror comic series is the newest take on the classic Archie characters. This terrifying new story is coming this fall along with Archie #1 and Sabrina the Teenage Witch #1, which are all being published by Oni Press.
The official solicitation shares more about what Archie in Hell holds in store. "In another time, in another Riverdale, Archie Andrews' radiant life is about to turn pitch black. Separated from his friends and bound by a terrible curse, there's only one way to save Archie: to damn him. But he won't be alone for long . . . In the footsteps of Archie's hit horror series, AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE, join multiple Eisner Award winner Patrick Horvath (Beneath the Trees Where No One Sees) and Eisner Award nominee Tyler Crook (Out of Alcatraz, Harrow County) as they forge a brand-new legend of Archie horror, leaving a blood-stained trail from 1690 to the present day."

"One year ago, we started work on what has quickly become one of the most significant and anticipated collaborations in Oni's 30-year history: our new and ambitious line of titles celebrating the greatness of Archie Comics. Now, we're proud to welcome a vital new member to that team: the phenomenally talented Ben H. Winters, who is teaming with the brilliant Fábio Moon to deliver an eye-popping, heartstring-pulling ode to what makes these some of the most celebrated characters in the history of comics. From ARCHIE to SABRINA and ARCHIE IN HELL, our new comics are brimming with pop and power – from content to design, each issue is intended to be a highly concentrated dose of pure entertainment and unadulterated bliss, propelled by the never-ending energy of Archie's 85-year legacy," said Oni Press President & Publisher Hunter Gorinson in an official press release.
The Archie characters have had many different incarnations and are no strangers to horror. There was the 1999 cartoon Archie's Wierd Mysteries, as well as the comics Jughead: The Hunger, Afterlife with Archie, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. What makes horror work especially well with the Archie characters is how it subverts expectations. The characters, good-natured all-American kids of Riverdale, being thrown into horror dealing with zombies, black magic, and werewolves, are the exact opposite of their original origins.
Besides horror, Archie has had many other notable crossovers through the years. The characters have crossed over with Predator, Jay and Silent Bob, the cast of Glee, Army of Darkness, and even Sharknado. The Archie characters have managed to stay relevant not only through crossovers, but through rebooted comics and the hit CW's Riverdale television series. The characters have stood the test of time in their over 80-year history, which is very uncommon.
Archie in Hell is available this November wherever comics are sold.
