Most comic readers may never think about who places the dialogue on a page. But the words, balloons and sound effects can shape how fast a story moves and whether a joke, fight or quiet moment lands. Creator Mike Wheeler is trying to make that part of the process easier with LetterMyComic, a browser-based tool built for comic lettering. The platform is aimed at creators, though its goal is simple for readers: help more independent comics look clean, clear and ready for print or digital release. Wheeler said many indie creators still use general design software to make word balloons and captions. Those programs can work, he said, but they were not designed around the way comics guide a reader’s eye from panel to panel. “So I built the tool I couldn’t find: a real lettering studio that runs anywhere,” Wheeler said. In comics, word balloons do more than hold dialogue. Their placement can show who is speaking, signal the order of a conversation and help readers move through a crowded page without getting lost. “LetterMyComic treats joins, melts, tails, and text-fit as first-class geometry, so what you drag around behaves the way ink behaves,” he said.
