DC Comics Officially Adds Jason Todd to the Teen Titans

The black sheep of the Batman Family has been put in charge of mentoring a new generation of heroes, but is this a long-coming opportunity for Jason Todd to step up to the plate, or fall on his sword? DC Comics will test his patience in an all-new Teen Titans series.

Hot-tempered and a loose cannon, Todd didn’t make the cut and yielded his reserve status. On a fateful mission to chase down The Joker, he meets a brutal end, only to resurface as the antihero Red Hood. Now DC, as part of its “Next Level” plans for the imprint, is putting Red Hood at the head of the table of the latest iteration of Teen Titans. Although this group of misfit heroes may find Hood’s harder edge a bit too much to measure.

The new Teen Titans book, slated to premiere later this summer, is brought to life by Kyle Higgins and art by Daniele Di Nicuolo, and will follow the new untested adolescents assembled that include Fairplay, Cheshire Cat, Proxy, and Wildcard on the trail of a missing friend. It’s a mystery that will cross paths with Jason Todd, and with the Red Hood in their corner, their chances of survival have just doubled.

The Teen Titans have one of the most intriguing legacies in all of DC Comics. The one-time junior Justice League of Sidekicks proved its mettle, especially in the 1980s under the creative revamp by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez. Even as the main roster began to age, there was always a place for the up-and-coming crop to fill in. As the second Robin, Jason Todd even served on the team in a pinch.

Although for some in some corners it might be a hard pill to swallow, the Red Hood, with all his issues, lack of restraint, and arsenal of weapons, striking up mentorship status for the next generation, is an exciting prospect nonetheless. The Titans have always functioned not only as a team but also as a family. With the ultimate loner at the top, we're going to see how Red Hood forges this group into a fighting force.

From Robin, To Red Hood, To Leading a New Breed

For a character that has faced so many creative challenges, this seems like a natural fit for Jason Todd. It certainly demonstrates some growth for the lone wolf who hasn’t always made the right choices. The dynamic of putting Red Hood in charge of a cast of largely untested, unformed, adolescent heroes, especially under the banner of “Teen Titans,” is an epic move forward in the legacy of the teen dream team.

An extremist strategy has worked before, especially when the time has called for a much more severe approach. At Marvel, the competitors handed the reins of the New Mutants to none other than Cable. The out-of-time antihero turned the graduate X-Men-in-training into X-Force, his own team of terrorist agents. With crime on the rise, perhaps it’s the perfect balance for Red Hood to mentor this group of misfits.

No other DC Comics character has been put through the wringer like Jason Todd. The one-time ward of Bruce Wayne inherited the role of the Caped Crusader’s sidekick when Dick Grayson moved on as Robin. It was an uphill battle for Todd, especially when the Joker struck him a fatal blow. As the extremist Red Hood, Todd has adopted some brutal methods; now he’s leading a new group of Teen Titans in his war on crime.

Jason Todd and the New Teen Titans series, part of the “Next Level” publishing initiative, will be written by Kyle Higgins with art by Daniele Di Nicuolo. The series will launch in the summer of 2026.
